So I finally got around to upgrading one of my older G4 macs to 10.4 and installed the Developer Tools. Previously went I’ve installed the Developer Tools I’ve found a nice Apple suppled X11 client sitting on the Utilities directory but, so far, I haven’t been able to find where they hid it this time. Does Apple not supply the X11 client anymore, and if so where did they put it? If not, what does everyone else use?
They haven’t stopped support, and on my computer it’s still in the Utilities folder. Might put in the install disc again and double check that the option to install it is checked. Maybe it’s off by default now.
I think it’s not part of the default dev tools install anymore. I believe you have to run a separate installer on the install DVD to get it.
(And technically it’s an X11 server )
How fortuitous, I just tried to run an NMR interpretation program that required an X11 something. I looked all over Apples sight and couldn’t find it. Whats the developer tools? What is an X11 thingy. How will I run this program once its installed?
From the Apple site:
If you put in your 10.4 installation disk, you’ll find “XCode Tools” (which most people still seem to call “Developer Tools”.) Install that, then go back to the disk and double clilck “Optional Installs”. That gives you the option to install a bunch of different things, including X11. more geeky info here.
Having just done this yesterday, I’ll add my 2 cents. I had done the default 10.4 installation and then went to install [del]Developer Tools[/del] XCode Tools with it in mind to install X11 there but it wasn’t an option but I installed XCode Tools anyway. So, based in the info in this thread, I went back and looked at the 10.4 installation options and saw the X11 installation there but the installer would not let me install X11 without reinstalling the entire system. I did that only to discover that XCode Tools would need to be reinstalled as well. Hopefully, YMMV.
