Mac people, advice/opinions?

So. I sent my iBook in to have it’s logic board replaced. . .long, long story short, they ended up replacing most of the guts at their expense. Groovy, as I got a larger hard drive & a few other free upgrades.

The downside is, they send the stupid thing back to me with OS 10.2, not 10.3 as I sent them. A somewhat snotty phone rep told me they send the machine back to me with the software as originally shipped. (Funny, mine came with the original X) I dig out my panther CDs and reinstall, only one has a scratch, and the instalation has an error. I ended up with a strange, somewhat corrupted OS that won’t let me reinstall any software.

(Please, please don’t ask me about system back ups. Mine got corrupted somehow, causing me to lose all my music, photos, writing, work documents, etc. The horror of crashing your system and damaging your back-up at the same time is best left for the pit)

Anyway, here I am with a funky, non-functional OS and a scratched CD. Apple has told me I’ll need to re-buy panther. But I can’t go back to 10.2 because I have no 10.2 disks, just my original OS X from 2001, which sucks a lot. Can I even install an older version over a newer version? I can’t decide if I should go shell out for the damn replacement CDs, or try to hang on until they release tiger in the spring?

And way to roll back? If I can do that, I’ll wait, but I can’t stand having a computer with shiny new insides and spending the next 3 months trying to work on this old clamshell I’m using at the moment.

Check your email.

that’s weird, when I got my screen replaced on my ibook, I got a free upgrade to panther from jaguar…

crazy world!

I think I stole your software

Is there an Apple Store nearby? You might want to mosey up to the Genius Bar, explain your situation, and see if one of the Geniuses can “think outside the box” to get over your problem.

Bring along your scratched Jaguar CDs, so they’ll know you have a legitimate copy.
