Quick Mac question. I’m running OS X and have been forever, no upgrade from a previous version to have made this strange mess appear.
I’ve got two applications folders. One doesn’t have a filepath, it’s just directly on the “Macintosh HD” in the Finder and is the default install directory for most everything - it’s where the standard apps such as Chess and the Calculator came, and it’s where I’ve put things such as Photoshop and Aperture… The other is under /Users/myname and just contains one stray application that I put in there myself.
Is it safe to delete this secondary Applications folder, in the myname directory? Or is it actually used for something?
it is safe to delete.
it is used for apps that only your username can access. If you create another account, and set the privileges correctly, the other account wouldn’t be able to access/use apps in that folder. If that doesn’t sound useful, then it isn’t.
Why would you delete it though? As rbroome says it’s for apps that are only available to your user ID (you sometimes get that question as you install stuff). It being there does no harm and uses negligible space.
