When you add a comment to a Word document in a Windows environment, it displays a sequential comment number. When we open a commented document on a Mac (running Word 2008), the numbers aren’t showing up.
This is a PITA, particularly when a 200-page document (often with more than a hundred comments) comes back from peer review and some comments refer to others by number (e.g. “the proposed language from comment 45 should go here”). We don’t control the peer review process, so can’t insist that they quote/refer to other comments in different ways. Also, though most reviewers are PC-based, Mrs. Devil (who does the layout/design of the books), primarily works on a Mac—so there’s no getting around that.
Is there any way to get the Mac to display those comment numbers?
