Macintosh " Utility "- do I need this?

Does one use this kind of a thing on a Mac? I thought Mac’s did such mundane tasks as defrag on the fly.

MacKeeper. Can’t figure out just how useful this kind of thing is.

MacBook Pro OSX 10.6.8, 8Gig Ram 2.66 GHz processor.

Are items like this crap or useful ?

HFS+ volumes (most Mac disks) generally do not need to be defragmented because they don’t keep writing data to the same areas, and instead tend to write new files to previously unused space, and the file structure doesn’t just start writing data as soon as it shows up - it waits a bit to determine the actual size of the file and tries to lay it down in one contiguous extent.

Turning the Mac off and restarting will probably do about as much as that dubious utility can to “speed up” your computer.

For that sort of optimization, all you really need is Onyx, and it’s free. It’s pretty much the gold standard for this category of routine maintenance software. And, yes, I do find it useful for keeping the system in shape.
