…sorry, pulled the trigger on the post button accidentally…
The crash totaled out my '11 Honda Element, farewell Element, you were a great car (aside from the bloody automatic
)
Once in hospital, i was brought into surgery, went under the knife, and ended up having the ankle reconstructed with two plates and at least 8 screws of varying lengths
fast forward through TEN WEEKS of non-weight bearing, and eventual physical rehab to rebuild strength, i began to be able to walk and drive after around 15 weeks, and things were generally okay, until the last few sets of x-rays and an MRI revealed a problem…
the bones were not healing correctly, it was healing in a “non-union” (whatever that is, didn’t think my own skeleton would try to unionize against me…
), basically, the bones were slowly and gradually spreading apart, and would eventually completely destabilize… not good…
I was given the choice of either having the surgery re-done, or getting the ankle fused, after long thinking and pondering, i decided to take the chance on the redo, this time, with an ankle specialist doctor who has worked on famous athletes and artists (dancers) that must make a living off having functioning ankles, the initial surgeon was a trauma specialist, and given the fact it was a car accident, i understand why he did the initial work…
so now, i’m 3 weeks post repair, back in a fracture boot, and back to another bloody 10+ weeks of non-weight bearing, it’s infuriating and frustrating, but i don’t want to have to go in for a third procedure, so i’m being even more conservative this time…
I will say that the accident was the wake-up call i badly needed, as before the accident i was in extreme denial of how bad off i was, i was morbidly obese, had severe undiagnosed sleep apnea, was extremely Vitamin D deficient (probably a factor in the fracture) and my mind just refused to acknowledge how bad off i was…
i honestly think that accident actually saved my life, if i kept ignoring it, i may not have lived much longer, and would probably not even be here right now…
I’ve lost a significant amount of weight since the accident (and am still slowly losing more, still have a ways to go), i am on a BIPAP machine for evenings, and feel a lot more alert and healthier now, no more hand tremors, momentary micro-naps, no hallucinations (yes, at the worst point i was having actual hallucinations… it was bad…) and the ankle is progressing properly, hopefully this time, it’ll heal properly
I’ll keep soldiering on, i’m going to beat this…
so, now the question…
what’s the best way to maximize healing from a bimolellar fracture that required plates and screws to repair? anything to add/increase in the diet? would increasing calcium/magnesium intake help ? (i’m on a 50,000 unit megadose of D for a few months right now, and have been instructed to taper off to 4,000 units after the megadose is gone…)
if possible, i want to heal faster, i know losing more weight would be a big help (as well as help reduce the apnea) I just want to get back on my feet, without having to use the rollabout knee walker as soon as possible…
that said, the knee walker is a lot of fun (its the off road version with the larger front wheels) and i’d be lying if i said i wasn’t contemplating turning it into some form of electric scooter when i’m done needing it once my ankle has healed up…
