Yes and no. He may be eccentric and ambitious but there is nothing repulsive or immoral about him and it’s great publicity for their hotels to be so closely associated with the swank Mad Men style.
I think it was also astonishment at both Don and Peggy, recognizing they are in a different class than he is.
