"Madame Bovary" (with Isabelle Huppert)

Just watched this movie for a French class, and I’m glad I bought the DVD rather than borrowing the tape from the department. Very moving, well acted (though I thought some cuts were strangely edited – that might just be my American taste). By the end I was in tears, not for the title character but for her poor husband.

I’m curious, has anyone seen this movie and read the original novel? How close does this film version come to Flaubert’s book? How about the black and white film version?

Never seen the movie, but I absolutely loved the book when I read it (in English). Quite good.

We’ve analyzed a few short paragraphs from the book in class, and it seems like an enjoyable read … but at the moment I have thirty billion things to read for my various classes, plus a translation of Baudelaire’s Le Spleen de Paris that I’m working on … I just don’t have the time to read Madame Bovary in the original or in English.
