Magic The Gathering Discussion

Humble. One of the worst things about the game is the continual efforts by the card designers to find ways to break the rules. Makes the final product a damn mess as they end up writing and re-writing not only the rules, but the cards with eratta and such. Quite difficult to keep up with actually.

There are instant spells that can rob a creature of its ability(ies) for a turn. If such a spell is played during the attack phase, that creature would lose its ability to band (among any other abilities), but would still remain in play.

I win :stuck_out_tongue:

Yes, it seems the hamsters have it in for me.

Well, I went drafting last night. I got some good cards, but unfortunately I was sitting between some people who decided to draft the same colors that I was leaning towards. So I went White with heavy artifact support. I had some small combos with Nuisance Engine and Leonine Elders, and Yotion soldier and Vulshok Gauntlets. Other small things like Raise the Alarm and Clockwork Beetle and Power Conduit. Mana Myr and Talismans.

Unfortunately My first match was against a suprisingly fast Green deck that was packing lots of Trolls and deconstructs. I don’t know how he managed to get two trolls and at least two deconstructs in each game. Not pretty. The second game stretched a while as I was gaining life from my 2x Elder/Engine combination.

In other news, I did manage to open a Chrome Mox in my first pack and was passed a Mindslaver which I only was able to play once.

Chimney Imp is the worst card I have ever seen. Ever.

You could also have a Vernal Bloom in play, allowing you to play Humility as an instant. Just for the sake of beling convoluted, since we don’t have Laurie Cheers here.

Justin

Lucky pull on the Mox. Imp isn’t the worst card ever, though. After all, it’s still a one-power flyer. It could win a game. [Sorrow’s Path](http://www.wizards.com/magic/autocard.asp?name=Sorrows Path)? [Great Wall](http://www.wizards.com/magic/autocard.asp?name=Great Wall)? Rakalite? [Seafarer’s Quay](http://www.wizards.com/magic/autocard.asp?name=Seafarers Quay)?

Those are truly bad cards. Cards that produce no win conditions, no card advantage, in fact, significant drains on your resource for little to no gain. These are the cards that are fit only to be fed to a [Wild Mongrel](http://www.wizards.com/magic/autocard.asp?name=Wild Mongrel).

Justin

Does Platinum Angel smell of shark-jumping to anyone?

I don’t know. You can switch the Sorrow’s path and then find a way to tap to damage your opponent. Great Wall, good against plains walkers or can be changed to some other land type (though I can’t remember the card that does it.) Seafarer’s Quay is pretty crap unless you have a passel of gold legends that you want to band for some reason.

Rakalite sucks a lot. I have no excuse for that card. 5B for a 1/2 flyer? Without even a decent effect? Crap. Crap. Crap.

In other news, I was in that shop last night and they were selling Llanowar elves for like $5! Since when is that a card worth $5?

Now that I know what the Plat does, why is it shark jumping? It’s not an instant win. You just have to kill it. In standard there is so much artifact hatred that it’s hard to keep an artifact in play long at all.

Ok, you’ve totally got me confused here. I fail to see how each forest producing extra G when tapped for mana helps cast Humility as an instant. Are you misremembering Vernal Bloom? I think you mean Vernal Equinox.

Hey Mike, you haven’t responded to my email. Are you coming for a game Saturday night? I’ve sent out lots of invitations but I’m not getting much in the way of RSVP’s. I’ve got two confirmed right now and even though I enjoy three-ways, more would be preferred. Plus you’ll get to meet the infamous Scott(he of the horrid luck with mana). He’s got a multiplayer deck almost as big as mine(perhaps bigger by now, since I’ve trimmed mine a bit).

Enjoy,
Steven

No, I’m afraid I’ll hav eto skip this one too. I’m going to Austin to celebrate my two year anniversary with Sarah. This is two I’ve missed, I need to stop traveling!

Dangit, that brings the RSVP’s which have expressed regrets up to three. Two confirmed, five outstanding(a couple of those are first-timers who probably won’t be coming). So even if everyone outstanding comes we’ve still only got a eight-player game instead of the twelve player game we could have had if everyone had been able to come. Twelve player games rock.

Oh well, enjoy your anniversary :frowning:

Just kidding  Congrats and have a good time! I’ll keep you on the list for next time as well.

Enjoy,
Steven

What? The entire two creatures that have plainswalk?

Well, if I could remember the name of the card that will let you replace the one land name with another I could come up with a use. As it is, there are plenty of cards that have mountainwalk and forestwalk, not to mention island walk. All of those colors combine nicely with white and thus you have a use (albeit a weak and situational one.)

MDSL you’re thinking of Magical Hack. Or the newer one that combined hack and Sleight of Mind. Great Wall still sucks though.

12-player games are quite cool, but nothing beats Neatral Ground’s Grand Melee’s. Played in a 40-palyer one once. Wish I still livedi n manhattan.

The card you’re thinking of is Magical Hack(Various other things printed since have a similar effect).

Other ways that banding can be lost in the middle of combat:
-Cooperation gets disenchanted
-Tolaria gets activated
-Shelkin Brownie gets activated
-Unstable Shapeshifter or -Volrath’s Shapeshifter copy a different card
-Fortified Area gets disenchanted (requires your walls to be able to attack)

And while searching through the oracle for all occurrences of “banding”, I came up with:
-You have Dire Wolves and you sacrifice your only plains (or it gets blown up)

…but I also learned that Tolaria can only be activated during one’s upkeep :frowning:
Oh, and why would Platinum Angel indicate that Wizards had jumped the shark? They’ve been toying with that ability since all the way back in Arabian Nights, in the form ofAli From Cairo. But Ali basically sucks, so I guess they decided to do it right.

Oh, and one more super-tech way for a creature to lose banding while attacking…

Have Opalescence in play and target an attacking creature with Soul Sculptor

Meh. You call those bad cards?

Thought Lash. Perfect for when you need to lose the game in under 10 turns.
