Thank you, eirroc, for nailing exactly what it was that I found unpleasant about Mahaloth’s OP. IMO, you can post about just about anything you want in the Pit, but sneering at anything will always get you shot down in flames.

but it was Redbosses title for the OP that brought to my mind the tone of Mahaloths post. You do realise that we’re all being far to nice here, someone come in and swear for god’s sake it is the pit! 
It’s quite a few days later, and I open the BBQ pit and there is Mah’loth’s anti-newbie thread still buzzing along merrily, full, no doubt, of new whinges about new people, by people who were new a breath ago…

Well, whilst in the Pit one must keep on their Kevlar Underroos on.
Despite that, I don’t find the rant worthy of scoring. Others may disagree with me, cool. But ranting for the sake of just needing to rant about something is lame.
This picking apart of posts and threads of long ago needs to stop (goes with other newer members of this board). It’s worse than if your family brings up shit from your past and they know the worst parts of your soul from childhood.
Sorry I don’t find the OP enlightening nor do I find it in the least bit of taste. In jest or not, unless Mahaloth did something to personally assault you or you intelligence, I find this kind of thread in extremelly poor taste. If you have a specific beef then why not state it, clearly and consisely rather than attacking the person as a whole?
So who are you going to pick out next? If it’s any one, for the sake of a giggle, I will wish that your eyes are scooped out of your eye sockets with needles.
BTW, we were all newbies somewhere somehow. If you can’t take the licks that come with it then maybe one needs to tread carefully. Oh and yes, I have recently joined a couple of boards and created my own board. I am not immune to the “newbie” syndrome…on both a poster side and as an administrator.

Well, Techchick, you don’t know me and I doubt you give a damn, but I disagree.
I think that’s rather a presumptous statement, and very unfair. You do not have the ability to see inside Redboss’s head and divine his reason for posting. You only have the same resource we all do, which is to look at what he has said here in the past and try to get some insight into his character. He is not beligerent. He doesn’t seem to get a thrill out of conflict. In fact, this is the first thread I’ve seen him start in this forum. So I would guess that he did ** not ** start picking on **Mahaloth ** for the sheer wicked pleasure of it.
He said that he considers himself a newbie, so on behalf on himself and his “fellows”, he was insulted. Good enough for me.
Please. How you could have gotten that impression from the OP, or anything else Redboss has ever posted, is way beyond me. I also don’t see how the OP is any less “tasteful” than what ** Mahaloth** originally posted.
I agree that maybe we newbies do have to take our licks, be tested, whatever. We’ll end up with a smarter, tougher crop of people, I’m sure. But I also think that, by the same token everyone that posts here should mean what they say and be prepared to be called on it.
Maybe I’m not expressing myself very well. I don’t usually do this kind of thing and I had no intention of jumping into the Pit for a long time. Just felt compelled to add my opinion, such as it is.
Well, well, well, where to begin.
I’ve responded several times in the initial thread we are all talking about, as recently as Monday(4/9).
Good work, Redboss, you are right. All of this post isn’t adressed to you, but to everyone. I have had threads that have bombed quicker than lightning. I have had some really dumb questions and a few really dumb threads.
I have asked questions that don’t serve the large audience at all(first-person shooter game). Whenever I asked one of these, I was genuinely asking them because I know that people around here are usually very helpful and even like helping. I never complained about newbies posting general questions.
I have made mistakes. I have frelled up.
I never meant to make anyone feel bad. I never meant for anyone to take offence. I would have put it in the pit if it were genuine. My biggest mistake was putting the thread in MPSIMS, where it was taken seriously(how, I still don’t see).
You see, if I genuinely meant that I dislike newbies, I would be a moron. I don’t want to be labeled “The Newbie Hater”.
I have never backed down from the thread, denied responsibility, or gotten mad at those who took offence. I’m truly sorry for anyone who took offence to it. I am not irked by your taking offence. Whether offence was intended or not, it was taken and I am responsible for that.
Here is what does irk me. Some people have decided that it is not enough to lay in on me for making a stupid thread. No, they go further. When I first tried to make light of my stupid mistake, they did not accept it. No, they got enraged, as if they wanted me to adhere to what they believed I meant.
They wanted me to come back in and say, “Screw you, newbies. I hate you.” When I apologized, I was attacked more for backing down. They desperately wanted to believe that I was a newbie hater and that I am evil. This turned out to not be true.
What can I say? I was wrong. But anyone who still persists in either labeling me as a newbie hater or holds any grudge against me for writing the thread is acting just as wrongly as I was.
I am still not mad that you took offence, which was totaly my fault(again, this is to anyone, not an individual). I am let down that you do not accept my apology and move on.
In the end, it is Redboss who is right. I don’t have a nasty bone in my body(well, maybe a few…). But at the same time, he/she was wrong. I fully understand the consequence of my words, and when they were revealed to me I reacted in a way I felt was good.
Ask yourselves this. What could I have done initially that would have made you feel better? What action could I have taken that would not reap a deeper wrath from you? If you find that there was nothing I could do to redeem myself, then fine. But I believe the problem will then lie with you, not me.
Again, and hopefully for the last time- I apologize. I’m not just sorry. I am coming to you and specifically asking for forgiveness for an action I took(without intended malice) and for which I am genuinely saddened. It was my fault and I hope for all our sakes that all of you can forgive me.
And once again, peace and resolution to battle ignorance settled upon SDMBland, proving once again that a people united in purpose are unstoppable in their quest.
Other, less sophisticated folks moved on to another beer.

I just wanted to say that I know Mahaloth IRL. He is a good man and I believe him when he says he is sorry. I know for a fact that he doesn’t hate newbies but was trying to be humorous. Unfortunately, written word doesn’t always convey the tone and inflection that was originally meant. He was trying to be creative, made a mistake, and got flamed for it.
There are many instances when someone says something stupid and apologizes insincerly to redirect attention but this isn’t one of them. I can only hope that hurt feelings can be ammended, we can be all friends, and that one day we can all walk down the street holding hands and singing Kumbaya. Okay maybe just the first and second thing.
