Mail order bride & sour honey

Did Shirley post her Jesusboy link again? Naughty, naughty …

Liirougue it is a spoof, but it is durned funny, and , interestinlgy enough, whilst googling, the only mail-order husband site out there…

Apparently there isn’t a demand for foriegn unemployable men looking for someone to sponge off of.

Damn.

My dreams…dashed.

Are we sure that one of those guys pictured on Shirley Ujest’s website isn’t Bubba himself?

Actually, I was under the impression that the actual wedding needs to be done in the US, otherwise the fiancee visa would not apply. I was also under the impression that if the Bubbas were married in Russia, the paperwork/visa for the bride would be much more time consuming to procure.

Unsuspecting kids: Trick or treat!!!

John Carter of Mars: Hold out your hands, kiddies!

Contrary to the stereotype…

Russian women are many times HOT. I do not understand were the ‘ugly Russian woman’ stereotype came from…

Not a particularly good example but my guess would be the classic Babushka.

That is Sooo kewl the honey guy paid up!
I’m proud o’ ya!

My friend who was partnered (not mail order) with a honey guy (different state, but one that also has gold) … is going through her own interesting education about honey guys!

After persuading her to buy the house (and honey shack) his bee keeping partner was selling (her credit, her down payment …) … he immediately concluded it was “his” house. And after a few years he demanded she sign it over to him … and threw a fit when she didn’t … he split and is now taking her to court for “his” house and managed to find a lawyer who thought it looked profitable … ahem … thought it looked like a worthy case under the law…

So, I’m thrilled to hear your honey guy education turned out to be benign!

John Carter of Mars, I’m very relieved for you that Bubba paid you the money he owed you; I thought you were out of luck. Might I suggest that you not lend him any more money. You just dodged a bullet; no need to get yourself in that situation again. Just sayin’.

You could well be correct. All I know is that after the initial meeting period of about two weeks in Russia, he must come back here for a time. Then if all are in agreement, he goes back and gets her. The technicalities of exactly where/when the wedding takes place aren’t something I know for certain. I sort of assumed they would get married over there, but I don’t know.

You have raised my hopes, however. If they were to be married here…well, Whoopee! There’d be a good excuse to get a bunch of pictures.

I won’t likely be lending Bubba any more money, medstar. Unless, of course, some of that “Right of First Night” stuff comes into play.

John Carter, any update?

Yeah! Those of us With No Lives are sitting on the edge of our seats wondering what is going on with Bubba and his Potential Missus!

This is still my favorite thread ever.

Funny this thread should pop up tonight! Bubba is but a few short hours gone from my front porch. He dropped off a jar of some special honey-based salsa and some bar-b-que sauce for me to check out.

The saga continues:

Since last we visited, Bubba found he was getting short of breath and took himself to a Doctor. Some sort of congenital heart defect was discovered, and Bubba spent two weeks hospitalized in Birmingham. It appears that medication can control his problem, so that’s being handled for now.

Never fear, dear and faithful readers, for all is back on track. Bubba’s trip to Russia has been re-scheduled for November 23rd. Bubba is taking this very seriously! He’s bought video tape and CD tutorials and even demonstrated some of his Russian linguistic skills for me. (Like I would know if he was correct or not.)

After all I learned here on the SDMB, I had a bunch of questions for him.

He’s going to Kiev, in the Ukraine. Upon his arrival, he’s to be introduced to a number of prospective brides. Presumably, he’ll find one he likes, and they will spend some time together. Then Bubba comes back to the States for a “Cooling off period”. (His choice of words) After that, if all is still a go, he goes back and gets her. I didn’t think to ask if the wedding takes place here or over there.

Bubba’s quite excited about this. He says that in the Ukraine, the average salary for a female M.D. is equivalent to $200 per month. He’s also learned that the Ukraine is the top honey producing area in Europe.

Now our boy is torn between finding a sturdy and experienced helpmeet to aid him in the apiary and bringing back a Doctor who will make big bucks.
Decisions, decisions!

Being an evil thinker, I can’t help but wonder what will happen if, upon her arrival here, Ms. Bubba proves to be a bit too much for the boy’s ailing heart and he expires in the throes of wedded bliss.

A merrily widowed female Doctor from Russia that owns a bee keeping business and a gold dredging boat would prove quite a tempting challenge for some of the good ‘ol boys here abouts, methinks.

I’ll post again when something new develops. Oh, yes. I secured a promise from Bubba that many pictures would be taken in Kiev and made available to me. I’ll post some on the ‘net if/when I get them.

Of course, the babushka is not exclusive to Russia. Poland has its share of little stada babas sporting the classic babushkas, as does most of Eastern Europe, I would imagine. (I have pictures of ancestors from Slovakia and Hungary-all the women are wearing babushkas)

For some reason this line made me weep with laughter.

I love this thread. Thanks much for the update – and keep ‘em comin’ please.

I can vouch for some of the Ukrainian talent.

Lady Chance works for a major military contractor. In what at first seemed a surreal turn of event they began (years ago) to import programming talent (they do software design) from Russia. First it was one…then she had a friend who could do it…then that friend had a cousin…

And no Lady Chance is running a spate of ex-Soviet folks doing programming for her!

And get this…

None of them were programmers before they came over. The first one taught astrophysics at a university near Kiev. When things fell apart she began looking for ways to come over and taught herself programming. Ditto for the others.

Hell, one was a ballroom dancer!

It’s amazing what smart people with a lot of motivation can accomplish, isn’t it?

And I get to share their travails. Things like coming up to Lady Chance and asking her “Vot does dis mean…‘I’m da bumb’?”

Not to mention the surrealness of knowing that in top secret military software development Russia is becoming the language of choice.

Ain’t life grand?

You should tell your Bubba that if he picks a doctor, it will probably take years for her to be recertified to practice medicine in the U.S., if she ever manages it at all. Medical education is very different in the FSU, and if she’s been out of school for a while, she’s probably rusty on her basic sciences. Then she has to take various very stringent national exams before she even has the opportunity to experience the joy that is medical residency in the U.S., before she can practice medicine independently.

(My first job out of college was for a nonprofit which helped former Soviets get jobs in the U.S.; things may have changed in the 12+ years since I worked there, but out of over 200 doctors our office assisted with the process, only 2 managed to survive recertification and get residencies in the U.S.)

Not discouraging Bubba, of course, just saying that perhaps he should modify his expectations of having a sugar momma…honey momma…whatever.

The Ukraine is now just Ukraine.

I just got four Bob the Angry Flower books in the mail. Here’s the relevant strip: Uke Fever.
