Mail-order orthotics: are they any good?

My orthotics are disintegrating, and I need to replace them. The last set cost something like $350, but they were almost entirely covered by insurance. My current insurance plan won’t cover them unless they are for a diabetes-related purpose (which they aren’t, thankfully), which pisses me off, but that’s a rant for another day.

As this set will be out-of-pocket, I’ve done a bit of shopping around online, and apparently you can buy custom orthotics for about half that. As the last set basically involved the orthotist sticking my foot into a foam box to make an impression and then taking 3 weeks to make the orthotics in his shop, I don’t see how mail order would be that different; the places all seem to do pretty much the same thing. They mail you the foam box, you make your own foot impressions and mail them back, and then they mail you the finished orthotics.

Has anyone tried this? What was your experience? Any tips? $150-200 is better than $350, but it’s still a lot of money to throw out the window.
