I’ve been looking for this info on the USPS website and couldn’t find it. I could call them and ask an actual person but I’m afraid of people. So I’ll ask here. 2 Questions:
I live in California but am currently visiting in NC. I have to mail a few things. Can I still put my return address in Cali and mail them from here?
What’s the largest size an envelope can be that can still be sent through a regular postbox using stamps rather than having to be sent as a package? I mean as long as you weigh it and put the appropriate number of stamps how far can you go?
I know the answer to the first is yes- you can put whatever return address you like on there. If for some reason the mail doesn’t go through, that’s where it will come back.
The answer to the second, if I"m not mistaken, is 16oz. I’m not sure of what dimensions, but I believe you can put a package, up to 16oz, in a blue letter/mailbox as long as the correct postage is affixed. I say this because for the last year or two, that’s what the boxes have had posted on them- no mail over 16oz.
It’s 13 ounces. 14 oz. or more and it has to go parcel post or one of the other package mailing rates. An envelope cannot be any bigger than 12 x 15 inches and 3/4 of an inch thick. All the info for USPS first class mail can be found here.
