mailing cheese

I have a friend who is going to mail me some soft white mexican cheese. There is a problem though, the cheese isn’t wrapped in wax so I don’t think it will keep. Anyone ever mail some cheese like this? How did they keep it fresh? Should she freeze it and mail it in cooler thing? Any input on how she can mail it to me and keep it fresh would be greatly appreciated.

HUGS!

Take a look here; if there is not enough info, they provide a telephone number for questions:

I’m assuming ‘mailing the cheese’ is not a metaphor for something else here

OK, get ready for it…
When mailing cheese, be sure to use Food Stamps.

Ba-dum-bump.

I’m sure she curd do it, but I can’t think of a suitable whey.

There may be some Customs/Agriculture issues if it’s coming from out of the country. I believe a large number of cheeses, particularly soft cheeses, cannot be imported. I don’t know if this applies only to commercial use, or to personal use as well.

You colby in trouble if you’re not careful…

johnson’s right.

Make sure you get parmesean before mailing cheeses. There could brie penalties.

I’ve never seen such a series of cheesy jokes.

The more I think about it, the more I think you should be very careful with Customs. I cheddar to think of the consequences.

Check please  I Camembert this foolery any longer.

Sounds like a gouda friend you have there

If I wanted this type of discussion, I would have posted in MPSIMS. Oaxacan cheese is not available in DC and the local grocery stores won’t order it for me. A friend in Missouri found some (in bulk) and offered to mail it to me if she could get it here without it spoiling. Now please refrain from the stupid puns. They are not funny and actually quite annoying when I am seeking a real answer.

Thank you,

Looks like she’s cheesed off.

…but Waverly and Dire Wolf started it!

If she wraps it in brown paper and put it in a small styrofoam cooler with some dry ice it should keep without freezing solid. This is how I’ve mailed things from zucchini bread headed for Saudi Arabia to animal hearts for dissections. If your friend does this, you’ll get the cheese in edible form so you won’t be feeling bleu. [sub]sorry, I couldn’t resist that last part.[/sub]

P.S.: It was great meeting you Monday; sorry I didn’t spend as much time chatting as I had hoped.

OK, a serious answer. How is this cheese usually stored? Room temperature? Wrap it well, put it in a styrofoam cooler and overnight it. Is it usually refrigerated? Wrap it well, put it in a styrofoam cooler with some ice packs and overnight it.

Of course, that last option would essentially be throwing cold water on it…

Waverly answered the question before goofing off

Isn’t the USDA Mail Order Food Safety page replete with 1-800 number authority enough?

all kidding aside here SqrlCub I checked US-Air and I found this link

If your friend can get in touch with a courier service they can ship things on certain flights if they are a known shipper. Packing it in dry ice seems to be the best bet. It might cost a bit more to ship it that way but I don’t think that UPS can do it any faster. To pick it up try a courier service near you or you should be able to get the way-bill number from who ever ships it. Sorry about before I got all caught up in the fun:)
