Is it that it works better in 1964 or that it aged better over the years?
I voted for Dallas because that is Major Kong’s style. Remember he talked about harelip[ping] everybody on Bear Creek. I also suspect Major Kong is the type of soldier/sailor/airman/marine that only knows about things from their small rural hometown and the military i.e. no worldly view.
Coincidently, my new hire group and I were trapped in Dallas during 9/11 (which was obviously a better place to be than our office in Lower Manhattan). We did a lot of partying that week.
Well, that I couldn’t say, since I was -14 years old in 1964. While I agree that Dallas fits with Kong’s provincial style, I don’t think Vegas is out of place. It wasn’t exactly obscure, even for a small-town boy. And since the joke is about the kind of supplies that might come in handy in a party town, and not so much about Kong, I think it works better with Vegas.
