Makeup question for Lady Dopers - Bare Escentuals

Just an update: I got my Bare Escentuals starter kit from their site, and by the time I finished watching the dvd I wanted to order from their whole line. Makeup for me has always been an occasional thing, mostly blush and lipstick when I leave the house. My eyelids are very allergic to shadow and mascara makes my eyes tear and burn. I spent half the day choosing products/colors and ordered from the much swifter-shipping Sephora site…more than $300 of stuff. :wince: I know, I know, but I feel like I can make up for 50 years of not buying it, if it’s good stuff. I’m losing weight and know that I want a nicer look as I shed the pounds.

I tried the starter kit products and used too much foundation trying to conceal, the first time. My eyelids felt like they were on fire until I removed it. It was clear that I should get Bisque for concealing. Hopefully that won’t be a problem.

My best day was today, applying Mineral Veil first, for oily skin (yes, at my age!), then lightly applying foundation, etc. I’m a redhead with freckling and sun damage beginning to show as broken capillaries, enlarged pores, hyper-pigmented spots. Overall, my goal is to decrease redness on my face. These products do a very good job of that. Contrary to opinions in this thread, Warmth was just fine on my fair skin; used very, very lightly. Because freckles add a yellow cast to my overall face, the warm color looked great with my skin and hair. However, I did need to add some rose-toned blush of my own so I didn’t look too brown/yellow. Glee used instead of Warmth would just add back the red I’d tried to take out.

So I’m expecting Tuesday: Bisque, True powder, Clear Radiance, blush, eye products in hopes that I won’t be allergic to them, lip products, plus the kajillion brushes needed. I’m crossing my fingers, but I’ll just try one shadow to test for allergies at first and Sephora accepts returns on unopened products.

I don’t really see much effect with Mineral Veil, other than reducing shine. My pores are still prominent on my nose. Any tips for applying it better? Does anyone else have a history of allergies to eye products and success with Bare Escentuals?

No eye sensitivity here, sorry. But I wanted to mention that I specifically use the Mineral Veil for softening the Warmth. Seems to make it appear more even and usually removes any harshness if I’ve been a little too heavy handed with the color.

:smack: Oops, I forgot to come back in and tell everybody what I thought! Yes, Susie Derkins was so kind to send me her samples and I have had time to play with them.

It was very easy to apply, but my main problem was that it emphasized my pores, especially around my nose. I really liked the Mineral Veil, though and the Warmth I still have some left and use it instead of blush. Admittedly, I just used my regular blush brush to apply the makeup, so maybe also getting one of the kabuki brushes will help.

Susie also sent a little sample if eye shadow and I do like it, again if I got a good eye shadow brush I think I would like it even better. I have a hard time finding eye shadow that I like that doesn’t have shiny glittery elements. I prefer matte shadows because they tend to hide the creases better.

So, I am completely sold on the Mineral Veil; I will give another try to the foundation, probably in a lighter color.

Thanks again, Susie!! And also to everybody for giving their opinions and tips. It is so fun to talk about makeup and be girly every now and then!

Maybe you need a primer before applying the minerals? I’m pretty sure Bare Escentuals has a primer, but I use Spackle from Laura Mercier. After my cleansing, moisturizing ritual, I wait until my skin is dry and I apply a thin layer of spackle. This is primarily silicone with other ingredients, and its main function is to fill in depressions (wrinkles, large pores, etc.) and smooth the skin’s surface. Think of it as a polyurethane on top of a hardwood floor. The polyurethane provides a smooth surface so the makeup can camouflage imperfections. Hope this helps.

Just popping in to let everyone know that QVC sells this as well. It looks like the eyeshadow might be a wee bit less expensive than the sparkle lady’s price. But only a wee bit.

I’ve been wanting to try this but have been advised by my oncologist to wait until after treatment…as a just in case measure.

I’m glad to hear so many Dopers like this!

After reading this thread initially, I went over to ebay, and looked around. I found a lady selling BareSense Pure Mineral makeup. For $45.00 (including shipping), I got two foundations (one Very Fair, one Fair), one bronzer (Sunkissed) and one Miracle Veil, all full sized, plus three very nice brushes: one kabuki brush, one face brush (fluffier than the kabuki) and one concealer brush. I’ve been very, very pleased with the makeup. In more than 20 years with my husband, it’s the only makeup I’ve ever worn that he’s commented on in a positive way! I find that I can use the Very Fair as concealer, and also to mix about 50/50 with the bronzer, which is too dark for me if I don’t cut it. The Fair foundation matches my skin perfectly, and the Miracle Veil feels fabulous. It takes me about five minutes to put it all on in the morning, and lasts all day.

At the risk of sounding like one of those flakes on the infomercials, I don’t think I’ll ever use liquid makeup again.
