I would like to set up a personal web page and was wondering if I should purchase a program such as Dreamweaver. It is awfully expensive, though I think it might be nice to be able to put it on my resume as some point.
Does anyone have any experience with this?
Is there a stripped down version for personal rather than business use?
I would also like to hear of any stories, personal experiences or suggestions for this goal as well. I would like to have something up and running by the end of the year.
You don’t need any programs to do a personal webpage. The recommended method is to do it by hand with a text editor. If you can’t, use something like Composer, which comes with both Mozilla and Netscape. You can download both for free.
Using Dreamweaver to create a personal web page is a waste of money. There is nothing wrong with Dreamweaver; it effectively is the industry standard for creating web sites. It’s just overkill for what you want to do.
Sure you can use a text editor, if you know HTML, or want to learn HTML. In either case, nothing wrong here.
Take the middle ground and find a freeware WYSIWYG web editor, such as 1st Page 2000
Microsoft Publisher (came with Microsoft Office) has a WYSIWYG website design module that works pretty good for basic pages. You’re not going to get a lot of bells & whistles, but your can add custom code and scripts in addition to the features supported by the program.
I would second the Microsoft Publisher WYSIWYG put forward by Fear Itself.
I bought both Microsoft FrontPage and Microsoft Publisher (latest versions) and found the latter to be great for basic web design. You can add in HTML codes as well to enhance the site you create from the Publisher basics. Eg. You can add in a great DHTML menu (for example) which makes a site look much more professional.
I was very disappointed with FrontPage. Waste of time if you ask me.
Good luck.
Let us know how you get on and what you decide to do.
Only requires server extensions installed, and only if the user wants to use the built-in (one-click) features of FrontPage such as the guestbooks, the counters, publish feature, and some of that stuff (most of which can be coded in another way anyway).
I have served many sites built in FP on servers without the extensions.
