Where are those common words?
When I was a wee child, my mom told me that the STOP sign meant “Step Toe On Pedal” (brake pedal). I believed it for some time, and wondered why they used the word “stop” on Little House on the Prairie, clearly before cars.
Oops, sorry…posted while thinking of something else entirely…:smack:
From WWII,
BOAC = Bastards Overseas Avoiding Conscription. Employees of crown corporations were exempt from mandatory military service/
My mother once told me that when she was school they said STOP stood for “Sales Tax On Pussy.”
Fortunately I wasn’t a wee child when she said it.
That’s just an ordinary acronym, not a bacronym. Coming up with a word-like pronunciation for the random sequence of letters that is the usual acronym is not uncommon and does not convert it to a bacronym.
The Committee for the Liberation and Integration of Terrifying Organisms and their Rehabilitation Into Society
That’s pretty much where ours ended up…after the fire dept put out the engine fire.
There’s also a non-PC one for Pontiac.
ADIDAS does not stand for “All Day I Dream About Sports (sex)”
Is actually from the founders name, Adolf(Adi) Dassler.
(fun fact, his brother Rudolph Dassler founded Puma)
Don’t forget to TIP your waitress, To Insure Promptness
Anyone who’s ever owned one will agree that BOAT stands for “Break Out Another Thousand”.
Time for a Polari word: naff.
I have no idea how well known the word is outside the UK. In standard (English) English it means useless, of no value. Polari is a gay slang. The story is that in Polari, naff means “heterosexual”, and is an acronym of Not Available For Fucking.
Great story, but it appears the be a backronym.

JEEP = Just Empty Every Pocket
FORD = Found On Road Dismantled
My friend used to to have a fake DARE shirt that said Doughnuts Are Really Expensive
Most of these listed were created as a joke, and everyone knows it, No one insists FORD is truly an acronym for Found On Road Dead.
Those aren’t what OP was referring,
I think people like them because they think they have some rare bit of knowledge, so it is easy for them to believe, and want to share their information, that Manure being used for fertilizer would be loaded on top because of the smell, and had to be stamped SHIT, for Ship High In Transit.
Those irritate me, too, because people insist on telling everyone that, and will get upset if you attempt to correct them, the others listed are not bothersome, because they are obviously a joke, and not taken as fact by anyone.
TOYOTA = Too Often Yankees Overprice This Auto

FORD- Found On Road Dead
I have read that they also sometimes referred to the FILTH (Failed In London, Try Hong Kong)
