Making music: where to find loops???

I’m not sure if this is better off in GQ, Cafe Soc, or here but I’m hoping there are others with similar interests who will help me out. Here goes:

I’m getting interested in making music using live instruments and my computer. I’ve got (what I feel is) the essential software, but what I’m looking for now are samples. I mostly need drum loops, but I wouldn’t mind some other stuff like bass or synthy-type sounds. Here’s the catch – I’d rather not pay for it. Searching with google, I’ve found lots of sites which have exactly what I’m looking for, but they all ask for it to be purchased, usually on a cd. I know I’m cheap, and I’m tryin to get somethin’ for nothin’.

Anyone out there do this stuff? Where do you get your loops? My aim is for anything from hip-hop to techno. Know of any good (free) sites?

I use a program called Hammerhead to make my own drum loops. It’s free, but I can’t remember where I got it from. The creator includes this email address: bram.bos@student-kmt.hku.nl with the program.

Other than that, I sample drums to create my own beats - taking the sound of a single bass drum, for instance, combine it with a snare from a different song and a cymbal from a third song to create my own beats. It’s not legal, I’m sure, but I’m also sure I could never get caught, and it may even be covered by fair use. I know hip-hop groups like Jurassic 5 use this technique.

Checkout Flash Kit they have 4000+ loops you can download free of charge - several generes. Perhaps something you can use
