Making Those Festive Banners That Hang From Church Walls

I remember churches in my childhood once had colorful banners that hung from their walls during the Christmas season that said such things as “Joy!” and “Merry Christmas!” etc. I want to make a couple myself and have these questions:

  1. Are they generally made of felt–or something else? I don’t want it to look cheesy or cheap. Would velvet work–and would it look okay?

  2. Can I get the material at a fabric store?

  3. Should I glue the material onto the backing material, or should I have it sewn? What would look best?

  4. Can you recommend a website/book that gives samples?
