Mal Evans - a man behind the Beatles

I can’t say I ever heard his name. I should have. This is a fascinating look at a man who gave his all for the Fab Four but got little in return.

I like it that it was Mal who counted aloud the 24 bars of “A Day In the Life”s chaotic ending and played one of the pianos in the final chord.

Watch the original official video, I think that is him at 4:56.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usNsCeOV4GM

Let’s not forget his star turn in “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer”! His biography Living the Beatles Legend: The Untold Story of Mal Evans is worth a read/listen.

In the “Get Back” documentary, he looked like he was having a blast banging on that anvil.

Police shot and killed him. Wow.

I never heard of him, but I wondered if he was parodied in The Rutles and I just didn’t know who the character was supposed to be.

So I googled “Mel Evans in the Rutles” (spelled incorrectly) and Google AI tells me:

Yes, Mal Evans The Beatles’ trusted road manager and friend, was parodied in The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash as the character Percy “Thames” Thistlewaite a large, loyal, but somewhat bumbling aide, played by Neil Innes, capturing Evans’s role as the Beatles’ protective, ever-present “big guy” in a humorous, exaggerated way

OK, I have seen the Rutles like 30 times and never saw a character by that name, or that even sounds like that. Then I corrected the spelling to Mal and google AI informed me helpfully:

While the primary members of The Beatles are parodied in The Rutles through the main characters (Ron Nasty, Dirk McQuickly, Stig O’Hara, and Barry Wom), Mal Evans himself is not explicitly parodied as a specific recurring character in the film

AI is going to be the salvation of the world. Snort.

FWIW, IMDB lists no such character played by Innes or anyone else. So where did that crap come from?

From what I understand, he was pretty close friends with each if the Beatles, vacationing with them, going out to eat and to get drinks, etc. But none of the lads went to his funeral.

Boy, that woulda been a problem at a funeral.

That is one of the strangest AI hallucinations I’ve come across. It’s like it knew there was room for a Mal Evans-esque character in The Rutles,.. so IF it had existed, THIS is what it would have been like…and it nailed it!

Mal also notably appeared in the Help! film; he played the swimmer who pops through the hole in the ice made by the curling stone bomb and asks for directions to the cliffs of Dover.

I’ve read that Evans’ cremated remains briefly got misplaced when being shipped back to England, and that John Lennon, after hearing about this, supposedly quipped “have they tried looking in the dead letter file?”

Worked like a dog and paid like one. Loyal to the Beatles and essential to their work. Suicide by cop after substance abuse issues and being cast aside by many. A sad story.

What I find odd about this is I don’t think there is any physical similarity between the two. Most people will recognize Innes as Brave Sir Robin’s minstrel in “Monty Python and the Holy Grail”, and I just don’t seem being physically imposing enough to play a character based on Mal Evans.

On the other hand, John Lithgow reasonably portrayed Winston Churchill on “The Crown” even though he’s about a foot taller than Churchill was. So who knows?

.. skinny but fit 5’4" Tom Cruise successfully played 6’ umpteen" built like a locomotive Jack Reacher. So who knows? Indeed.

The funniest part of the Google AI “fact” is it created a name for the character! Apparently out of the aether, because "Percy “Thames” Thistlewaite " has zero google matches, not even from this thread.
