Malcolm Young RIP

Founder of AC/DC

RIP

Those who have rocked salute you.

Ah, man. Such a player. No fat on his grooves. Just heavy-gauged strings on a single-pickup Gretsch Duo Jet through a Marshall.

If I had to state who I am trying to play like, it’s Malcolm, Keith Richards and Jeff Beck.

Thank you so much.

[Salute]

RIP, MR. Young; you totally fucking rocked!

Perfect.

Along with Keef, best riff machine in rock ever. RIP, Malcolm.

Yes.

Agreed.

No matter that people who don’t understand Rock and Roll may claim that it’s all the same, and it’s only a handful of chords, and is simple and mindless- AC/DC kept it simple and are still the ONLY ones who did what they did. No peers. Rest in Rock, Malcom!

I’ve also always loved the way he looked on stage. He must’ve been a multi-millionaire at least since the massive success of Back In Black, but he always looked like the bloke next door, washed-out jeans and washed-out t-shirt, standing a bit in the background, doing his thing and letting his brother have the stage.

To be fair, they all looked like they’d just rolled off the tour bus rat-arsed and sleep deprived. A squirt of deodorant, a quick swill of listerine and onto the stage. They made it look like anyone could be them but of course no-one was. It takes genius to look like *that *and sound like that.

So here’s my own little salute to you Malcolm, you ramshackle, scruffy genius you. [doffs cap]

My favourite ACDC moment was stepping into a heaving Nederhutte for a bit of apre-ski after a hard day on the slopes. The opening strains of “thunderstruck” boomed out and the place went mental. I don’t know why they are perfect match for skiing but they simply are. Maybe because they are both primal and elemental, tapping in to our lizard brains.

RIP Malcom Young,
While just about anything by AC/DC was good for it, Thunderstruck was the best for driving down the west slope of the Rockies on I70

The world is definitely a bit smaller, a bit emptier now.

Although I loved Bon Scott’s singing, Back in Black came out the summer I turned 18.

Everyone had that album. It got played at every single party, and every car’s cassette or 8-track player.

It was the soundtrack of that summer: a perfect album in every way.

Very sad news.

At least he’s no longer suffering now. Have a drink on me with Bon.

A four minute interview, with Angus, Phil Rudd, but mostly Malcolm, each individually. Apprently this was when Rudd had just rejoined after 12 years. Listen to how smart Malcolm is - focusing on rock n roll vs rock and breaking down why to the drums. He even beat boxes to show where the swing in their beat is. This is key stuff. It’s all in the relationship between Malcolm and Rudd - that’s their sound.

ETA - that’s a different music thread!! This one! Musicians, Please Explain Why I Love AC/DC... - Cafe Society - Straight Dope Message Board

And Rudd may be criminally whacky, but listen to Malcolm describe Phil’s groove.

Made me think of this thread where a Doper asked what defined their sound: What gives a band their "sound"? - Cafe Society - Straight Dope Message Board

Argh - I realized I had pasted in a different thread, found the right one still in the edit window, slammed in the correct link…and saved it to the wrong spot in the post. Sigh.

There’s an interesting interview and a nice old AC/DC thread in there I swear.

This one hit home, hard. My partner and me had a shot of brandy in his memory and poured out a big dollop on the floor for Malcolm.

Ave, Mr. Young, Ave!. Thank you for the pleasure you brought to our lives. Back in Black is one of the finest rock albums ever made, and you gave us so much more as well.

…and Tony Iommi

RIP Malcolm. Back In Black was the soundtrack to many memorable moments of my life. And For Those About To Rock.

Ok, I’ll strongly grant you that, I just forgot him. But now that’s the definite troika of riffdom, Keef, Malcolm and Tony.
