Maleficent (film) will be a box office bomb.

So I think it’s fair to say it wasn’t a bomb.

The movie was okay. Angelina Jolie was great, and Shartlo Copley plays a desperate nut as well as anyone, but really I don’t think it will be remembered as a classic. It kind of blew part of the story (the third fairy godmother’s blessing was forgotten about, a curious decision) and overall it’s just, well, kind of forgettable. The character of Aurora is a big zero, and after she is revived the movie devolves into a forgettable CGI chase-and-fight fest that manages, somehow, to make a dragon scene boring. It does have a coherent story with a main character who experiences an arc, which these days is saying something.

Bumping to note that the $120M prediction is now off by more than $120M, sure as the $250M prediction has long been off by more than $250M; not a whole lot of movies have made it past the three-quarters-of-a-billion mark, but danged if this one didn’t swing it with Australia to spare.

I’ll admit that I suspected this very same thing when I heard about it coming out. I thought, no way this will ever top Frozen, it will be mocked as a pale imitation.
