Friday, IE on my work computer was hijacked. I don’t know where the bug came from, as I try to be careful where I go.
Earlier I’d logged onto webmail. There was an email there from someone I know, but rarely hear from. The message was generic, so it set off alarms. The email contained a url that was not a hotlink. Needless to say, I did not copy and paste it into the url box to find out what it was. I backed out the inbox.
Is it possible that simply opening an email – without clicking on any links, nor opening any attachments – cause my computer to become infected? Or is it just a coincidence that the hijacker manifested itself sometime after opening the email?
