Mama Tiger, this attitude pisses me right off.

I’d like to add to the voices saying “Let’s not judge what is and is not a ‘dead-end’ job.” If a person has an otherwise happy life, enjoys the work, and is able to live contentedly on the pay, what gives anyone else the right to look down their nose at that job as only fit for “losers”?

Somebody has to do the shit jobs and there’s no shame in any of them.

In the words of my favorite Brit - “CLUCK CLUCK!”

Well, as my old Dad used to not say, you’re almost guaranteed a good cluck from a plump bird.
London Ro-Ro-Rooster Calling

Yikes, I’m stuffed ! I know what I meant to say and I don’t think that said it

Okay, the above was a general observation … . Honest, Guvnor!

Me thinks you been living next door to that knockin’ house a bit too long.

Cock-a-doodle-do

You know? I’ve seen Mama Tiger post a LOT of stuff here, and I’ve only been here around 5 months? (4?), anyway, enough to “know” her personality insofar as one CAN know someone else’s personality.

I’m surprised that those who’ve been here longer, and have surely gotten to “know” her better are so quick to think her comment was meant to be a “put down”.

I saw the whole thing as a “that poor (albeit rude) boy, has a SUCKY job, if you study hard and get a good education you can likely avoid that”.

NOT as a “what a loser that kid is for HAVING the job”. The whole conversation that she had with the lady who was the subject of her post was regarding the job, NOT the kid being what was to be avoided.

Again, I do NOT see that in the conversation Mama Tiger had with the other lady that they were belittling the clerk HIMSELF, but were saying “THIS kindof job is horrible, look what a hard time that young man is having, to hopefully avoid this, we can study, get a good education and get a good job”!

Hell, I’ve used MYSELF as an example for my son.

“Mom? why is your car not a new one”?

“Because I didn’t study hard and get a good education, and now I’m having to make up for having to work at crummy jobs all those years”.

“But mommy, you’re making lots of money now!”

“Yes, but it takes a LONG LONG time to make up for too many years withOUT a good job”.

In other words,
If you don’t want to work at a crummy job, then study hard and get a good education does NOT = People working in crummy jobs are losers.

Argggh, This…

“…anyway, enough to “know” her personality insofar as one CAN know someone else’s personality”.

Was SUPPOSED to read “someone else’s personality ONLINE”

sorry!!

Is irony the correct word for the phenomena in this thread?

A mother uses an unhappy worker as an object lesson for her child. The people of this message board objects to the object lesson. This woman is now an object lesson on how we should judge the parenting techniques of others.

How I see it is a mom is doing the best she can. Could she have done better, maybe, but it isn’t a big enough “sin” to scar this young man for life like some here have suggested. Since we do not know about their home life or the people they socialize with, I don’t think we are able to say that he will become elitist. But I would take the bet that he will do his best to get a good education.

Yes, The CEOs earn way too much. Somehow the board of directors think they can make money for the stockholders, which by the way, are actual people. You democrats are for people arent you? At least you say you are, I guess it depends. You talk about corporations like they are not people who have hopes and dreams and are working for a living, when really a large part of our nation is mostly composed of those corporation employees you despise. Ya, CEOs…very overrated, very overpaid, is it their fault? Should they refuse the money? And if they turn a company around? You would still hate them wouldn’t you? If they made a million people more prosperous you would still talk them into the dirt wouldn’t you. You are a hypocrite, but you will never see it.
You want only SELECT people to benefit, not others. The people who make the right decisions are your cursed. The people who sit back and pitty themselves are your heros. How wrong you are

newmeat I have no idea what you a rattling on about. I read your post a few times and can only reply with laughter cause it doesn’t make sense and I have no idea how you got the message that I am an Capitalist or are you saying I am anti-worker, I am soooo confused. So please play again.

I think newmeat stumbled into the wrong thread, his post looks as if he were in another forum and accidentally posted here or something.

to be honest, I don’t know how to get a post in the right place. I am new at this. This board seems to change topics and threads every time I visit. What the hell, I am just here to vent, this is the BBQ pit isn’t it? Just ignore me then.
Deb2world, I have read some of your posts but I am not sure what you are. Are you AN capitalist? I got the impression of a demoliberal. I never said you were an anti-worker , maybe an anti realist?

I realize I am completely out of the flow of the board conversation, I apologize to all. but I did notice you did not offer a single counter argument to anything I said, although out of context. There were ideas and beliefs presented to you which you offered no rebuttal towards. Am I asking too much? not even a snappy comeback with no depth?

Well, probably because no one is awake right now, I happen to live in AK, so it’s only 10:30 here, but it’s bedtime (for most people in the US anyway, except for the nightshifters and such).

As to why no one’s rebutted it, or probably not likely too? Well, your post wasn’t really “on-topic” regarding this particular thread, you’d probably like to lurk for a bit to get a feel for this particular board, and maybe read some of the FAQs.

Your ideas might be better put forth in GD (great debates), an area I stay out of most of the time, as the subject matter is either WAY beyond my scope of knowledge:D, or doesn’t interest me, though I like to read some of the threads.

Good luck and welcome!

I am truly sorry. i should lurk more. lurking is good. No, lurking is not good, I mean, in a message board its good…I will try again later.

newmeat welcome to the boards.

I didn’t reply to you cause really I didn’t understand where you were coming from and honestly was confused by your post. I was afraid I had crossed over from the SDMB into the TMD (Twilight Message Board[sup]TM[/sup]) and would get off at the wrong offramp and into some alternate world where hijacks are more than just about love of pie

I am a conservative with a liberal slant FYI. Believe in Capitalism, anti-union, but pro workers rights. I lean to the left on some issues, right on others, but mostly sit in the middle, just like most Americans. Being ex-military I tend to be patriotic, but do not delude myself that my Gov’t is always right. I try to see both sides of an issue. Others see me as wearing rose colored glasses cause I don’t worry about much, but in reality am a serious person who has learned not to sweat the little stuff and that most stuff falls into the “little stuff” category. So I tend to be rather a jokester in real life.

If you would like to continue to discuss my political, or lack thereof, slant, it would probably be prudent to move it to another thread and allow this one to continue to discuss mothers, children, workers, education, socio/economic training.

I obviosly misread you and I further apologise. I am intrusing (is that a word?, it is now…) on what ever conversation is going on here. I thought, at the time, that I was posting something philosophical but obviously that was not interpreted as such. I will hold my tongue until I see a clear opening. An opening in here is like a worm hole in space. You have to have to have Scottie open the correct channel.

Actually no apology needed. It is very, very hard to offend me(plus my replies to you have contained some levity which shows that I took no offense). I look forward to meeting you in other threads.

(If you do sports, well actually baseball, you can usually find me spouting my opinion right and left in those threads–be it ever so humble there is no place like The Big Ed)
