Man Burned Alive on Bed- True?

Recently, while reading passages on an English exam, one retold the story of a presumably black man being burned alive on a cast iron bed, as a public spectacle. Hundreds witnessed it with great indifference, as a small group of vigilantes fended off any would be liberators with steaming hot pitch forks. The man was also tortured before the flaming and brutal ending.

Did this ever occur? I vaguely recall something like this happening in the South, early 20th century perhaps. Maybe late 19th century. The article was like a letter, and was written on the one year anniversary. It did much to condemn the apathy of the crowd. Anyone even know who wrote this article? Thanks…
