WTH? It’s weird that it seems to be an old story from last year. The guy was actually caught in 2011 but he was deemed too crazy to stand trial just last year. I’ve never heard about this, there is no Wikipedia page on it (there’s a Wikipedia page for everything!) and no one has discussed it here at the Dope as far as I can tell. I would think this would be all over the weird news sites.
Anyone have any more insight on this story? Or any more weird stories in the spirit of Halloween? I miss the seasonal BOO forum, where is it?
Yeah, I saw the pics a few years ago. None of them look like real bodies though. It’s unclear what exactly was done to prepare/create them and the video describes him as just using “fragments” of mummified bodies in making the dolls.
“Carl Tanzler, or sometimes Count Carl von Cosel (February 8, 1877 – July 3, 1952), was a German-born radiologic technologist at the United States Marine Hospital in Key West, Florida who developed a morbid obsession for a young Cuban-American tuberculosis patient, Elena Milagro “Helen” de Hoyos (July 31, 1909 – October 25, 1931), that carried on well after the disease had caused her death.[1] In 1933, almost two years after her death, Tanzler removed Hoyos’s body from its tomb, and lived with the corpse at his home for seven years until its discovery by Hoyos’s relatives and authorities in 1940.[2]”
Meh, these guys are pikers. Now Ed Gein, there was a craftsman. Made a tom-tom by stretching skin over a coffee can. Stitched a row of nipples into a belt. A skull soup bowl. Not ornamental doll, but useful objects. There’s the pioneer spirit that makes this nation great.
