I am appealing to Windows experts here.
I use Windows 98 2nd edition.
There are “ghosts” who put icons in the box or section on the bottom left hand corner right after the Time notice. These icons represent functions which are supposed to be readily brought up on the screen.
Pardon the lack of precision in my Windows language; but can some good souls here, what about Q.E.D.? give me some very simple instructions on how to control them: remove them, exterminate them, and their programs whatever, or bring them back, etc. Some can be ‘exited’ but they return with every re-booting.
I think they consume memory when I don’t want them around not even in the non-sightable background.
Thanks a lot, and God bless you all.

There are two possibilities:
-
You are looking at the “Quick Launch” toolbar that normally sits on the start bar on the left, separated by a double vertical line from the rest of the bar. You can show/hide it by right clicking the start bar and going to the toolbars option. It contains shortcuts only to often used programs and therefore doesn’t take up any memory or processor time. You can drag and drop shortcuts on or off it and rename / reposition them etc.
-
You may be looking at the “System Tray” that normally sits on the right hand side of the start bar. This shows applications that run all the time but may occasionally need input - such as a virus protector. These programs are running and take up memory and processor time. You can stop them running by clicking Start… Run… MSCONFIG and looking through the startup tab. However, these programs are usually very usefull or essential so I would not recommend disabling them ad hoc.
You can experiment. Make a list of what’s checked off in the startup tab under msconfig. Try removing one item at a time and see how it affects your system. If things go kerflooey, turn it back on.
