Manhattan Prosecutors file criminal charges for Trump re Stormy Daniels case - ongoing discussion here (Guilty on all 34 counts, May 30, 2024)

Thanks. Nothing of note.

I wish I could win court cases by waving a few news articles at the judge. :grinning:

Ladies and Gentlemen? Fellow Dopers? May I present … Ms. Natalie Harp:

The Twuth, as always, is stwanger than fiction.

Maybe, maybe not.

I feel like they give him printouts of news stories and a sharpie much like you give a child a kids menu and crayons at a restaurant to keep them occupied and busy so they don’t make a fuss.

I was going to say the same thing. He has weapons-grade ADHD so his lawyers have given him a coloring book to keep him busy while the adults talk.

Actually, no I don’t. Link?

So her job is to make the orange narcissist feel better. In ancient times those were called court jesters or fools. Today she could be replaced by Prozac.

I bet you’d also like a pony. The only problem is that judges can differentiate fact from opinion. Trump doesn’t seem to be able to.

And then, there’s this:

Thanks for that, David; that explains a lot. As long as Ms. Harp keeps printing things out that are favourable to Mr. Trump, he’s kept occupied and happy. Plus, there’s a good chance that he won’t pay much attention to the proceedings. I’d suggest that the printouts are very much like a coloring book, as was suggested a little earlier; something for him to do when court gets boring (which, let’s face it, it can be), and perhaps most importantly, distract him so as to keep him from interrupting proceedings.

But it might also explain why he’s confused as to why he and Mr. Biden are polling neck-and-neck. After all, if he’s so great and wonderful, as these printouts attest; and Mr. Biden’s going to turn the US into a Communist Marxist Socialist paradise, again as these printouts attest; then why are any so-called “Americans” planning on voting for Mr. Biden? The answer lies in the fact that he sees nothing critical of him, likely thanks to Ms. Harp.

I recall a journalist friend from my days living in Toronto. He worked for one of the conservative newspapers, but he subscribed to the centrist paper, the left-wing paper, and the other conservative paper. He was one of the most-informed people I ever knew, and could come up with practically unassailable arguments in political debates. “If you don’t know what the other sources are saying, how can you craft an informed and legitimate opinion?” Given that, it seems to me that if Ms. Harp is preventing Mr. Trump from hearing the other side, then she is doing him a disservice. Or maybe she’s being paid to do just that. Either way, if Mr. Trump is basing his after-court remarks on cherry-picked one-sided media that doesn’t tell the whole story, then I’d suggest that he cannot craft an informed and legitimate opinion.

Thanks again, David; your link explains a lot.

This probably deserves its own thread, because it seems to me like a huge issue. It only takes one person to hang the jury.

This thread is full of optimistic anticipation that Trump is doomed, it’s all over for him, etc. Sure, we can gloat over some things: the strong evidence, the no-nonsense judge, the fact that Trump looks weary, etc. But it is all irrelevant if there is just one juror who disagrees with us smart Dopers.
And it doesn’t have to be a fully-crazy hat-wearing Maga believer. It could be someone like Judge Cannon in the Mar-a-lago trial. A reasonable-sounding, educated person with little social media, who raised no red flags for being unacceptable for jury duty.

That’s only true if you are manipulating them in the direction they already want to go. Like flat-earthers, anti-vaxxers, creationists, etc. You can’t manipulate them in the direction of actually listening to reason.

I broke the link out of basic decency and respect for humanity.

https:// jonmcnaughton. com/

Oh yeah. If you’ve ever wanted to see a Trump sycophant, then it’s Jon McNaughton.

I’ll give McNaughton this: he does have artistic talent. Plenty of it, in fact, and his landscapes are quite nice and pleasant. To be honest, his “Harvest Memory” and “Christmas Carolers” are nice slices of Americana. If somebody gifted me a print of either, I’d say “Thank you, this is wonderful,” and would truly be thankful, as they are nice pictures. I’d likely hang “Harvest” or “Carolers” over my living room sofa. They’re nice pictures; I like them.

But the political Trump ones. And the Obama ones. Holy hannah, nothing McNaughton has done in regards to politics would be above my sofa. A football player wearing Number 45 scores a touchdown—guess who the football player is. “One Nation Under God” features Jesus Christ holding a copy of the US Constitution, while past US Presidents genuflect. “The Forgotten Man” features a down-on-his-luck American worker, who Obama has intentionally turned his back on. If McNaughton wasn’t so talented with art, I’d dismiss him as a whackadoodle. Well, he could be a whackadoodle, just talented with art.

I hope she gets paid in advance for that job too…

Might that explain this (if there’s any truth to it)

The toot, the whole toot, and nothing but the toot

I don’t know why I can continue to be amazed by the fascist toddler. But the fact that I learned today that there is a person in this world whose job it is to make the world’s most malignant narcissist feel better about himself simply flabbergasts me. She’s an overpaid babysitter, an ego fluffer. Part of me is going, “of course he has that, It makes perfect sense”, and the other part is going, “this is not normal, none of this is normal.”

Like others I was also curious about the stack of papers I saw him waving around in front of the courthouse the other day. I used to be cynical about Trump’s view of the world. But they really were coloring books. They were a toy that was there to soothe his fragile ego when things were starting to get too real. He’s concocted this bubble around himself that is so complete that maybe he really doesn’t understand why his actions are bringing the consequences that they are now? He’s completely detached from reality.

If the Human Prozac is helping to maintain his ignorance and stoke his overconfidence, she may also be helping him lose the election. One can only hope.

But unlike the flat-earthers, anti-vaxxers, creationists we argue with out here on the internet, this hypothetical MAGAt infiltrator will have to sit there in the court room, for several weeks at least, actually listening to the evidence against Trump, and the arguments the prosecution builds around that evidence. They aren’t allowed to look away, or nod off, or read something else while we’re arguing.

And that has a nasty way of finally getting through to people like this. Echo chambers are real (see the stuff about Trump’s personal echo chamber above!), and it’s entirely possible that this might be the first time this hypothetical MATAt infiltrator has ever heard about some of the things Trump has done.

Last night on Meidas Touch they showed a graphic of where jurors got their news from. When I saw that juror #2 gets their news exclusively from X and Truth Social, I became deeply concerned. I can’t imagine why the prosecution allowed this juror to slip through. But I didn’t hear any of their voir dire questions.

If all else fails, there’s always the time-tested “have eleven jurors stand up one by one and turn their backs on the twelfth” technique.

No wonder reality has proven so difficult for him, he lives in a right-wing media bubble.

Explains the MAGA base as well.

In a few minutes the day will start with a hearing on whether or not Trump violated the gag order. Should be fun.
