Here’s the article.

It seems I got a detail or two wrong.

That guy seems pretty dopey. It’s perfectly legal to drive your pals around in your car, but not if you’re the getaway driver for a bank robbery. It’s a good thing he’s not on this jury.

Yes, I was expressing my cynicism and skepticism, not stating an actual fact. It is definitely within the realm of possibility that Trump will face actual consequences from these charges, but I personally don’t believe that will happen. I believe he will get a slap on the wrist as a rich, famous, first-time white collar offender. I put the odds at 1% that he will spend even one day in jail (a number I pulled out of my nether regions, for the record).

I agree. But what if ‘he’ is? I hope the jury sees the truth and votes accordingly, but Trump has wriggled free so many times and there’s no telling what the jury will do.

For you and anyone else wondering that, there’s a thread for it:

They might do any of those things. Any attorney will tell you juries are unpredictable.

But nothing I’ve heard has suggested they are likely to do that. It’s not a forgone conclusion, a hung jury or not guilty are possibilities, but the likely verdict is guilty IMO

Could he be ordered to surrender his passport during the appeal process? I know it’s purely symbolic, but I’m okay with a thousand tiny humiliations.

I certainly see you’re point. Maybe had this come out, in such a close election, it tips the election. I can appreciate that.

But for me personally, he covered up a decade old one night stand with a woman after a well-timed Access Hollywood release. I just don’t think that is a big deal. It’s politics - I doubt anyone knows or cares about this if Clinton had won. If we wanna clean up politics, enforce and charge those election crimes.

That guy is a Fox News contributor and contributing editor to National Review.

I’m confident that the DA vetted the jurors well enough that somebody so biased wasn’t selected to serve.

Well, that explains the dopiness. Thanks for pointing that out, I missed it.

It is not the jury’s job to “care” – in fact, it is kind of preferable that they do not. Their job is to produce a verdict, There is no issue of whether they care about the situation or not, they are just supposed to decide whether the evidence says the defendant did or did not do it.
And, after all, the fact that they were not able to wiggle their way out of the jury box during voire dire shows that they at least care enough to take part.

Hijack:

It’s generally the breeders and/or owners rather than the training stable that selects the name. Using part of a sire’s and/or sometimes dam’s name is done to indicate the bloodline, like War Admiral, sired by Man o’War. A lot of harness horses have Hanover in their names since they descend from horses bred at Hanover Shoe Farms. A Thoroughbred was named Shecky Greene with permission of the human.

Or people can riff off a living human’s name. There’s a racehorse in the UK named Insane Bolt.

Hijack off: I would love to see Trump take the stand and be calmly, decisively disassembled into sputtering incoherence, but it’s not gonna happen.

If Cohen can continue to keep his cool and the cross doesn’t find anything to shake his recital of the facts supported by previous witnesses and documentary exhibits, Trump is toast.

Just one question, as I have ZERO experience with jury trials, only appeals. Have you NEVER lost a slam dunk?

I know I have.

As always, I greatly respect and appreciate your insight. And I’m keeping every one of my appendages crossed!

I hope Trump never sees the inside of a jail cell because he drops dead of apoplexy upon hearing the guilty verdict!

Sure.

But I didn’t predict I’d lose.

If I’m in a case, by the time I send it to the jury I’ve convinced myself of my arguments.

Same here. I’m invested in the DA’s case. So of course I don’t see how he’s exonerated.

It doesn’t mean I can’t be wrong.

But I’m not going to predict it.

I recall (not terribly many) instances in which I had absolutely slam dunk appeals, aced the arguments against bumbling incompetent opponents. What a gut punch when you get the unfavorable decision.

(In my case, I suspect some small portion of the explanation was my appearing as the carpetbagging federal lawyer from out-of-state, up against a good ole boy member of the local bar.)

The opposite would make a great SNL skit like the Reagen Mastermind skit. Trump goes up to testify with his stack of papers that we just think he’s doodling in… and BOOM… completely exonerated.

It would be hilarious if Trump couldn’t attend because he had either had to be in court or was in jail. Not that it would make a whit of difference with his sycophants.

God, I hope the forman gets to say - “Guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty…” and on, and on 34 times.

It’s not evident from the article, but that has a byline. One Google search later…

And then I hope the Judge says “Bailiff, take the defendant into custody.”

At that point, he’s a convicted felon and a substantial flight risk. Yes, sentencing won’t come until later, but that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be in jail once he’s convicted.

(I realize that’s not a given, and if I were a betting man I’d predict he’s not immediately going into custody if convicted; the judge would set a sentencing date and allow him to remain at liberty until that time. But it would seem prudent to restrict his travel, or require him to wear a gps ankle monitor. If he’s convicted, he’s a felon. He should be treated like one).
