Well you know, Mother Teresa knew how to properly file her expenses when paying porn stars off.
There’s a Roman Catholic Church joke there somewhere.
per cnn:
Judge Juan Merchan is off the bench as the jury deliberates.
“I’m going to be in the robing room for a little while just in case we get a quick note. Then I’ll probably go upstairs,” Merchan said before he left the bench. “I do direct all of you to be please here. You cannot leave the building.”
As the jury began deliberations, Donald Trump stood up and smiled and then began speaking with his attorney Alina Habba and his son, Donald Trump Jr.
Trump then looked around on his way out of the courtroom and seemed to give a couple of small smiles to some reporters.
Remember: Trump is required to stay inside the Manhattan courthouse while the jury deliberates.
Okay, I suddenly want them to take six months to reach a verdict!
Now that you mention it, it is rather remarkable that Trump was able to overcome his ADHD for the length of this trial since I was certain he’d pitch a fit at some point. But his courtroom naps make me wonder if his defense team was sedating him.
Can anyone shed some light on the deliberation process? Do they review all of the information again before voting on the charges? Do they vote first and start discussions if they don’t have a unanimous decision? Is there a set process or does every jury make it up as they go along?
I assume this is a mistype or slip of the tongue and not some legal phraseology I’m unfamiliar with?
lapsus digitus. from the person typing for cnn. switch the please and be.
msnbc is having a discussion on how long it should go. most believe before the end of the week.
My understanding is that, other than instructions about how to fill out the forms and a reminder of what the goal is, they get to make it up. Anything else would be interference by the court.
Has Melania made any appearances at all for this trial?
I’m pretty sure it wasn’t argued, though (leastways, rocking_chair hasn’t mentioned it, IIRC).
What happens if jury deliberations go on for some time? Do the jurors get to say at, say, 10 PM that they’re done for the day? Do they set a time to meet in the morning and just go home, or are they sequestered at a nearby hotel?
Do the lawyers and Trump get to go home and reconvene in the morning when the jury returns? If so, can Trump do his “speak to the press” shtick outside the courthouse?
trump puts his favourite rants on stickies. the photographer got a good shot of it during the morning camera shoot.
his sticky is on a print out titled “quotes”.

Or he was more closely monitored than usual, leading to not being able to ingest any substance he wants. You know, I was neutral on what exactly he used but now that you mention this sleepiness, I am leaning toward him self-medicating with substances of questionable legality (and that’s not a euphemism, either, it could be grey market not necessarily black market substanes.)
I’m sorry, I’m just loving the mental image of Trump living at the courthouse…
Exactly, juries can handle their business almost any way they want. There might be a restriction like “If someone goes to the restroom deliberation has to stop” and in New York apparently the foreman is chosen by court procedure and not a vote inside in the jury.
Now, this is about what I would expect:
- About 15-30 minutes of catharsis while they talk about the trial overall and all the things they couldn’t speak about with anyone, not even each other for weeks.
- Order lunch (prompted by whoever does the jury care in the courthouse).
- A couple straw polls to see where they all stand.
- Discussion of how to proceed in tackling the counts. For example, are enough similar enough that coming to a conclusion on one is the same as for a whole batch of them.
- The nitty gritty. Discussion on the counts, even if they are all in agreement to make sure they are convinced either way and that they’re not making a snap decision.
- Repeat various steps as necessary.
the jurors are partly in control of their schedule. they are told by the court to start around 9 or 9:30 am, but they can go long if they believe it has worth. usually they will end by 4:30ish.
IME, this is exactly right. The jury is sequestered with absolutely no one else in the room. There are, TBMK, no cameras in there. They are on their own, their only job to arrive at a verdict so they can GTHO of there and go home.
they did try the family man argument in opening and closing. it may have been more effective in closing as his kids were behind him.
i don’t believe it got traction as more than one witness said it wasn’t a big concern.
