Manhattan Prosecutors file criminal charges for Trump re Stormy Daniels case - ongoing discussion here (Guilty on all 34 counts, May 30, 2024)

There really should be a good Latin derived word for trying to divine what a jury is thinking by their actions in the courtroom and notes sent from deliberation. Iuraremancy, maybe?

Of course, but I’m pretty sure they’re not talking about what they had for lunch.

per msnbc:

the two teams of lawyers are going through a paper transcript in 6!" binders.

i would figure they are doing what the msnbc commentators are doing. finding and reading the various pages of testimony.

Jurometry.

no j in latin. go with an i?

another bell has rung. they may be ready for readout.

oop, not a readout! another note!

things are moving fast.

i’m betting that the judge may call for time and have things set for first am.

I did. Which is why I hate sans serif fonts.

ah, i thought it was an L.

Just in, per CNN: The jury wants to rehear the judge’s instructions from this morning.

Wow.

Hard copies … y’know … have some upside.

I get the impression this is a relatively smart jury.

per cnn:

Shortly after the jury sounded the buzzer for a second time, a court officer handed another sheet to each side.

“We did just receive another note,” Judge Juan Merchan says.

“We the jury request to rehear the judge’s instructions,” the note reads.

rc: this is starting to look like a first am thing now. i’m 99.9% sure there will be no verdict tonight.

deep down, I have trouble believing rump will end up having any repercussions at all from this, let alone actual jail time.

So I hope the jury takes as long as possible because at least we know his orangeness is inconvenienced. Kept from his nap/stimulants, at least!

From an earlier post, it’s a quirk of NY law that apparently both prosecution and defense must approve giving hard copies to the jury, and the defense rarely does so.

cnn:

Defense attorney Todd Blanche whispered and smiled at Donald Trump after they got the note.

Judge Juan Merchan is going to bring the jurors into the courtroom to inquire if they want all of the jury instructions heard or a portion of it.

Neither side objected.

Judge Juan Merchan says “if and when” a time comes for a verdict, he will bring the alternate jurors in and have them sit in the front row.

The readback is estimated to take about 30 minutes, according to the court reporter.

Prosecutor Joshua Steinglass says the readback consists of about 30 pages.

Judge Juan Merchan asked if they can disable the WiFi capability on the laptop that the jury has. Prosecutor Susan Hoffinger said they’d look tonight and make sure it’s off.

The jury is entering the courtroom.

Judge Juan Merchan is reading the notes into the record in their presence.

Attorney Todd Blanche was leaning over and whispering to Donald Trump and attorney Emil Bove while they waited.

I’d agree tomorrow afternoon is more likely. Considering the questions, I’d be worried if I was the defense. If they agree Cohen is credible enough where his testimony agrees with Pecker’s and don’t go falsus in uno, falsus in omnibus regarding Cohen, they could be a lot closer than we all expect. I mean, if they think they could get out of here this night, I’d expect them to tell the judge so.

How long can a jury deliberate before the judge starts poking them to get done with it?

That seems likely, but I’m kind of hoping that the jury elects to continue deliberating. Based on my experience (which, remember, was not in New York), it can if it wishes. It’s not as if the clock hits 4:30, a bell sounds, and everybody goes home for the day.

I’m sure that if the jury wanted, a conference room could be arranged at a nearby hotel, if the courthouse absolutely must be closed at 4:30.

msnbc:

the bell sounds like a 1960’s telephone.

jury dismissed after asking to rehear instructions. court to resume thursday at 9:30.

judge merchan askes the attorneys to stay until they agree on passages requested. merchan says trump can leave the courtroom not the courthouse. as long as he’s close by. in case there’s an issue that needs to be resolved, he can quickly come back.

rc: the jury instructions are around 50 pages. it is quite the packet. all the commentators are waving their packets when discussing it.

Kind of like the Bat Cave only for judges.

Welp, looks like I was wrong. The jury has been dismissed for the day. They will reconvene tomorrow morning.
