My name is Aaron Koing, and I have some questions on many subjects that have troubled be a lot:
What is antigravity?
What are verneshots?
If the superstring theory needs at least 10 dimensions to work, what arfe the other six dimensions? I understand the first four are height, length, width, and time, but what are the other six?
Why are penises and breasts so obvious in a naked human being while not so in our closest relatives, chimpanzees and other great apes?
Are viruses living?
What are nanobacteria, viroids, and virusoids?
How many states of matter have been discovered and what are they?
#3 See Brian Greene’s “The Elegant Universe” - He explains string theory to the lay person. In general, he says that the other dimensions are curled up and extremely tiny, so we can’t perceive them.
#4 See Desmond Morris “The Naked Ape” - IIRC, He says human primary and secondary sexual body parts are more prominent because we, with our larger brains are more visual.
Hope that gets things started.
The smarter folks should be along later and give much more.
“Huge volcanic eruptions along continental rifts, launching massive amounts of rock into sub-orbital trajectories with the resulting impacts resembling meteor strikes.”
Verneshots are the product of someone’s overactive imagination.
The idea is that lava and gases over a plume in the earth’s mantle can build pressure to the point where they catastrophically break through a thick section of the planet’s crust. This leaves a hollow shaft, miles wide and miles deep, which collapses at hypersonic speed, and hurls great chunks of the planet into space. World of the Strange Look mom, I’m a meteorite!
Extraordinary stuff!
As such, I’ll believe it when I see it, and not before. Of course, if I ever actually do see such a thing, I’ll be dead.
Greene is about the only guy who can explain superstring theory so you have a fighting chance of getting it. His book before The Elegant Universe (sorry, forget the title) is devoted fully to superstring theory, so may be more appropriate. There is also a currently running PBS program The Elegant Universe if pretty graphics may help. Basically agree with above. One standard image is to imagine looking at a garden hose from a thousand feet in the air. It looks like a line, a one-dimensional object. It is only as you get much closer that you can see there are more dimensions to it. In the same way, superstring posits a bunch more (7?) spacial dimensions curled up in an intricate way that is so small, so very very very very small, that we can’t percieve it.
The other six are dimensions that we do not perceive. Keep in mind that the empirical record of superstring theory isn’t so hot right now, so don’t take what they say as empirical truth.
They don’t have breasts, so that one’s easy. Why is the human penis so much more visible than those of the other great apes? Simple: we’re freakin’ huge compared to them. A mountain gorilla’s is about two inches long, with a proportionate girth.
Read “The Naked Ape” as mentioned above. It’s very interesting.
There are five that are easy to find info on–solids, liquids, gasses, plasmas, and Bose-Einstein condensates–and, IIRC, three others that I’ve seen reference to, although they’re unusual.
Depends on how you want to define them. As far as I know there is no really good differentiation as to what will constitute an entirely new state vesus a condition of an existing one. Here are two more “states” which I believe fall under BEC.
Nanobacteria are theoretical bacteria much smaller than thought possible. They are thought to be able to create apatite through process called biomineralization. Further research has not supported the initial findings on them.
