I own a guitar with a maple fretboard and it seems the fret ends require filing every 6 months. Does this mean the fretboard is constantly shrinking? Is this just a fluke?
If you are wondering, I got the maple fretboard because it looks and feels very nice.
In addition to the wet season/dry season differences, your fretboard does shrink from its original size. Eric Clapton finally retired his “Blackie” Stratocaster after he kept catching his fingers on the fret-ends. You can get a neck refretted, and it’s not just the ends that need it. The tops get worn, and it plays hob with the pitch.
Aunt Marigold tells you not to fret, but you know you must.
Having a guitar refretted or having the frets recrowned isn’t unusual. Having to do it every 6 months is. I’ve had my Les Paul for years and I’ve had it worked on twice.

sleestalk I’m betting that your Les Paul does not have a maple fretboard though.
I have guitars with ebony fretboards that do not present this problem.
