March for Our Lives - March 24, 2018 gun control event

The kids from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the Parkland survivors, are organizing a march in Washington, DC in favor of gun control, the March for Our Lives. There are events being organized for other cities by and for people who want to participate but will be unable to get to DC.

I believe this is important. I believe it is important to address this problem and address it in a substantive way, and I intend to be marching on that Saturday to convey that message.

I’m not waiting for the next inevitable mass shooting to get off my ass; I’ve made and I’m going to help these marches be successful. Because there WILL be another, and one after that, and on and on, unless and until we do something about it ourselves: no one is going to save us from ourselves but us.

In Parkland, 17 children lost their lives just a couple of weeks ago. That number should be too many, should give anyone pause, IMO. In Las Vegas, my city, just a couple of miles from my home, 58 people were gunned down in moments (and another 851 injured). All total, since the Sandy Hook shooting 6 years ago (20 children & 6 adults killed), there have been “at least 1,607 mass shootings, with at least 1,846 people killed and 6,459 wounded” (Cite). That’s a lot of interrupted lives and a lot of pain and suffering that innocent people are going thru, innocent families are going thru, and it doesn’t have to be this way.

This has to stop. It has to stop before every American has a personal story about one of these incidents, before a majority of Americans personally know someone who’s lives are affected by these incidents.

I’ve had enough and I intend to spend that Saturday with my family, friends, neighbors and others in my community helping show political leaders, business leaders and the world that we will no longer tolerate our children, our citizens, and yes, our police having to live in fear and possibly die in a hail of bullets.

Enough is enough; many of us are marching for our lives on March 24, 2018.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that RTFirefly started a thread about this already, but there wasn’t much content and mine was actually started first; I just had to run it past the mods (and modify it) before I was allowed to post it.

Also, for the few of you who also live in the Las Vegas valley, if you’re looking for info you can find it at Facebook

Schools are safer than in the 1990s.

You want to do something substantive, something to change things? You really think guns are the problem? The local sheriffs department was called 39 to 47 times about the Parkland shooter. Many of the teachers and students thought he was dangerous. The local police refused to arrest him when he was a minor because the school and community didn’t want negative ratings.

Enjoy your walking around and chanting.

As for me, I’ve upped my donations to the NRA, GOA and SAF so that they can protect my second amendment rights.

It’s great that you’re passionate about this and all, but I’m wondering, what exactly is their goal? Their website says:

It seems likely that they’ll fail at that. Several paragraphs later, they get perhaps a tad more realistic:

Can you tell us anymore about this “comprehensive and effective bill”? I couldn’t find any details on the website. Has it been drafted yet (after all, they’re calling for it to be “immediately brought before Congress”)? If I donate, can I get a copy? Or are you marching in support of some vaporware legislation?

You already highlighted children so I didn’t have to. But to pick a nit, 13 children, one adult (18yo) student and three adult (35+yo) staff members.

Last I heard, this student led march has amassed over $6 million in donations, hired professional organizers, leaders, and spokespeople, and is planning on a long term agenda. IOW they are turning into another anti-firearm lobbying group hiding behind the mask of a student led grassroots movement.

Perhaps the professional legislators should be expected to work the details.

While I applaud the effort, it should be clear by now that facts and accuracy have no weight with those who support these efforts.

You are absolutely right; thank you for correcting my error.

:dubious:

Unfortunately we’re pretty short of those.

Will be with you in spirit via the Tacoma, WA rally. The last time I checked there were 427 all over the country!

Signed, a gun owner

Anyone else getting an OWS vibe? What should actually be in the ‘comprehensive and effective bill’ that must immediately be brought before Congress is not just details.

So they are marching to force Congress to do something, but they don’t exactly know what. If they don’t know what the bill should say, how will they know if they get it?

Regards,
Shodan

How about instead of blaming guns, you try to do something about why people feel the need to shoot up schools in the first place? If no one wants to shoot up their school the NRA or whatever bogeyman you choose to pillory is irrelevant.

Why don’t you? What have you done to advance this agenda you speak of? :dubious:

I raised my children not to be bullies and to at the least talk to teachers if they see someone else being bullied.

Yeah, I don’t know if you’ve ever seen “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy”, but this rally already reminds me of Brick Tamland’s “LOUD NOISES!” rant.
