Woke to 32 Ferrets. Dammit. But it is theoretically heading to the low 50s - we shall see.
I tried an experiment last night that seems to be working somewhat. Since the fan in the pellet stove isn’t working, I fired up the stove and set a fan in front of it to draw the warm air that comes out in its own and spread it in the house. While it’s not as efficient as the internal fan, it does add heat to the house. I count that as a win.
I am miffed. I ordered some t-shirts for the No Kings rally next week and they’re coming from China! Had I known that, I wouldn’t have bought them. Dammit. Dunno if they’ll even get here by next Sat. Yes, miffed I am!
I’m starting the day with oatmeal-n-raisins, No further planning has occurred. The day shall unfold as it does. Turns out I was mistaken about what FCD wants to do today so I may or may not go to the boat with him.
Yeah, it’s really important to take care of it while you can. The biggest takeaway was to make sure you avoid probate at all costs. It’s not hard to do, but if you don’t take the proper steps your estate can be tied up for up to a year and cost your heirs a huge amount of money.
We did our estate planning in, I believe, 2012. I wonder if we should review and update it, but we have no children or heirs. I only have siblings older than me, and if they’re gone, the estate goes to a charity. It’s all pretty simple, so I’m not sure a review would be necessary.
Morning all. My alarm is set for 7am and I almost made it to that, but up and pilled and will break my fast once this message is dispatched. Plumber is due back about 8:30am, I have my car out of the driveway but had to park it kinda tightly as this is garbage day and I need to leave room for the truck to get to my and my neighbors bin without hitting my car. Plumber should be done relatively early and once the bill is paid (Jtc, the bill is high but not out of reach, and the thing will be Done. Then we’ll see what the rest of the day holds. It should be a nice one, 44F now but will get to 72F later.
Ummm…I believe Nelson is a Dog…
JtC, great news about Hubs not bleeding.
J-Bats, I can understand your frustrations, I’m finding if my hand strays slight and touches one of the innumerable controls on my steering wheel all sort of interesting things happen…
boo fae, hope TM wasn’t to Troublesome.
FCM, most everything comes from China these days (at least clothing-wise). Or India. Or Vietnam. Global economy, after all…
And just about finished with breaking fast with my Big Bowl O’Cheerios and need to open the garage door for the plumber. Have a good Thorsday all.
Good morning. My local NPR station is doing their fund drive this week, so I’ve persuaded my phone to play the feed from Ball State Public Media, whose fundraising is probably next week. I’m a sustaining member of both stations.
Outside, it’s 32 degrees F. Later today, it’ll get up to 58.
Slithy_Tove, I hope your poison ivy rashes aren’t too awful. When I was younger, calamine lotion was the standard stuff for that. It never helped me much. Sarna is more effective, IMO, and it doesn’t leave you marked with pink, powdery blotches.
Doggio wrote, “I’m in N.C. If you don’t have French Toast fixin’s when it snows, the Wampas eat you.”
It’s a good thing Wampas prefer French toast to human flesh.
I’m going to have to miss some of my catching up, It’s 9AM and time for breakfast.
It’s 51F and raining outside. We are slogging our way through yet another atmospheric river, and the daytime high is expected to reach 56F. It’s rained for the last few days, and it appears we won’t receive a real break until around Saturday…maybe.
JtC, yay for the good news about your husband’s lab results and non-bloody pillow! I laughed at your pictures. I did not mean for my Real ID comment to seem like “Nanner, nanner”. Trust me, that orange bastard is trying to fuck with my state in many ways.
J-Bats, it seems like your rental should be named Christine. I hope the rest of the trip is uneventful. I’ve never had an issue with my adaptive cruise control, but to be honest, I can’t remember the last time I used it. As for Android Auto, I never had problems with it working properly with rental cars or the fleet cars I drove while working for my agency. However, I cannot use Android Auto on my Jeep, which I actually prefer to Jeep’s UConnect.
Nuts, yay for good garden dirt! It’s far to soggy to do anything here, but I am anxious to get out there in my dirt. I’m not sure how far I’ll go this year. It is a lot of work, after all.
I guess I should get day started. I need to finish loading the dishwasher so it can do its thing. Beyond that, I’m not sure what the day holds. Take care of yourselves!
Yeah, but I do my best to avoid buying from them. Personal crusade, yanno.
I’ve been very productive in the 3 hours I’ve been up. In no particular order, I’ve showered and dressed, changed the bedding, rollsucked, watered the houseplants, repaired FCD’s favorite cardigan, made ice, replaced the tablecloth and placemats in the dining room, ironed the seams of the hatch cover, filled the pellet stove… not sure if there’s anything else, but go me!!!
Repairing the cardigan was a real challenge. It’s dark blue and figuring out how to stitch it was the first issue. When I sorted that out, I had to thread the needle. And while I have a bright light to shine on the work, my table is to my right, so my hands kept blocking the light, dammit. But once I figured out the damage, it was relatively easy to fix, and it would have been easier if my eyes weren’t so crappy. Luckily, it was along a seam and the repair is almost invisible, even to those with good eyes.
Otis is as bad as a kid - he’ll stand in his doggie door, half in, half out, letting cold air in and warm air out. I’ve chased him out twice. I fear come summer, it’ll become a portal for bugs.
OK, what to do now? I guess I can launder the sheets. Onward!
Good Morning. It was 46ºF this morning, and I went to bed at a decent time last night, so I had no excuse to not walk. I was pleased to be up anyhow, as I kept having a repeating nightmare. Actually, I should write down what I remember of it. It would make a great Call of Cthulhu scenario.
Mrs Magill had some carry-over vacation that she needed to burn this month, so she took the afternoon off and took care of the weekly shopping, leaving our evening open. I was going to make the vegetarian chili I’d posted above, but she then pointed out that our local Italian restaurant was donating a percentage of their sales to the High School Choir, so I had a lovely Chicken Picatta for dinner.
I am enjoying seeing the redbuds blooming. I had planted a redbud in the front of our old house in Charlotte. Maybe I should put one here. Does anyone know whether dogwoods are native to Tenneessee?
Unfortunately, living this far east in the time zone means dawn isn’t until nearly seven o’clock right now.
No, but will planning is always a good idea. You never know when you’re gonna get hit in the head by a toilet seat from the Space Station Mir. You don’t want he State to decide where your estate goes.
swampy What if you whack those who cut out right after Eucharist? If you time it right, no one will ever know.
JtC - I hope your husband likes the chili. It’s the first one I’ve had that I could consider hardy. It certainly is not watery and has a proper chili consistency. The recipe as written does not have much of a bite, so I add a couple of dried chilies, which I remove before serving.
Flyboy I would imagine that late and early lunches are encouraged, as I would think you’d be most bust when everyone else is on lunch.
Suddenly a solution presents itself.
In Dracula there is a scene in Carfax Abbey where Author’s Rat Terriers show just how effective they can be at rodent control.
ETA: Thank you to everyone for your support. I know I sound like a broken record, but it really means a lot to me.
This makes me think that it might be fun to take a road trip and have coffee or a beer with various Mumpers.
He is (you’ve met him ), but half his ancestry is small terrier. They were bred to dispatch varmints.
I don’t know about native, but they grow well in most parts of Tennessee. When I lived in Smyrna, there were several in our complex. I’ve seen them in the mountains and almost to the Mississippi.
Up, caffeinating, breakfasted and fixing to do KP. I’ll do some laundry this afternoon and play with my new toy whilst the clothes are washing.
I woke up for a bio break around 0300 and knocked the travel mug of water off. No big whuh, other than I’d left the sipper open. I grabbed a mop to mop it up and knocked my tablet off the night stand. When I picked it up and put it back, the mop handle knocked the mug off again, this time popping the lid off. I made the executive decision to not get out the mop bucket to squeeze the water into and got a towel from the hamper. They’re being washed today anyway. Through all of this, Nelson was busy lapping water up off the floor (his water dish was fifteen feet away, but licking it up off the floor was somehow better.
Sounds pretty simple to me. What about a living will that directs what happens if you’re incapacitated (like drastic measures to keep you alive, etc.)? Apparently, most wills are transferrable from state to state, except for Louisiana, which has some sort of weird laws that are holdovers from the French.
I had to drag my wife downstairs to talk to the guy. We’ve had wills for a long time, but they’re woefully outdated and have heirs listed that we no longer wish to endow. This has been one of those guillotines hanging over my mental well-being for some time, so I demanded that she go to the free consult with me. So we now have an appointment with the lawyer next month. It’s all gonna cost us about $2K, but the peace of mind is worth it.
Today’s breaking of the fast was a pumpernickel bagel with avocado on top and a bit of scrambled egg on the side. Bacon.
Temps continue to climb. We’re supposed to hit 70s on Saturday!
I was clerking the 300 Slide today. It wasn’t busy until the end, when a bunch of McKesson boxes an a big order for Wake Med hospital needed to be data entered. So it was a mad rush at the end, and I got out 30min after the package cars left. I did my Senior Day shopping, $91, and I didn’t even buy beer. I’m taking a brief nap before taking Roomie to PT.
So any heir mine would be waiting a bit for the $12.47 in my estate?
Just when I think I’ve got this, I read some new bullshit the TN house is pushing through. HB 754. This bill is just a giant HIPAA violation, and it should never survive a court challenge, but Christ on a crutch, why did this have to happen to me now?
Yeah, we signed documents for dealing with this as part of our estate planning process. As well as funeral directives and organ donation stuff. And we created a trust and put title to our house and personal property in the name of the trust.
On the gardening front, I purchased and planted a couple of little succulents. I have no experience whatsoever with succulents. One of them is inside as a house plant, and the other is outside in filtered shade with the azaleas. We’ll see if I can keep them alive. My husband says they’re easy care plants.
Lunch today is agedashi tofu: tofu cubes dusted with potato starch and deep-fried, then served in a puddle of tempura sauce with grated daikon and ginger and green onions. It’s a light-ish lunch to balance out the awesome Mexican meal we had yesterday.
Now it’s time for my daily dose of Adam-12 reruns. I never watched this show back in the day, but now I’m catching them all on the geezer channel.
Louisiana is the state where the laws are based in Napoleonic law. A friend of my sister’s was an attorney in Mexico (more Napoleonic law) and left Texas when he passed the bar in Louisiana.
I’ve gotten ads for these in a dog form. I find them to be something for a little kid, but a little strange for an adult.
It’s Tennessee, the end of the legislative session will be in April. They introduce this kind of BS that would present a SCOTUS challenge around this time of year, never to be seen again once the new session begins. Batshit crazy Mae Beavers was a master of this.
According to my sister, who has a zillion of them, they’re easy once you get past the learning curve. We took a bunch of starts to the plant swap with us a couple of weeks ago.
The weather is beautiful, bright and clear, with a forecast high of 68 ferrets and a low tonight of 38.
Today I made Peet’s Major D’s, pour-over. That’s just not the method for this coffee; it needs to steep.
Last night a housemate showed up, the princess dog’s favorite person, but the dog chose to sleep in my room anyway. Now the housemate’s feelings are a little hurt and he’s spent the entire day re-ingratiating himself to the princess. Her evil plan worked. (There was no plan. It’s ten degrees cooler in here and she’s furry.)
Today I did a bunch of adulting, and now must play in the dirt. I might get to sleep outdoors this weekend and made a batch of erbswurst yesterday just in case.
The princess dog and the regular UPS driver have a thang going on. She stopped barking at the brown van long ago and instead has a happy fit and runs over to see if it’s her buddy, get a dog biscuit, and try to climb into his truck.
After I went to the mailbox yesterday, the dog refused to leave the pickup, having a massive pout because I came straight back instead of taking a longer ride.
At one point I went outside and there was my UPS package on the front porch-- finally!-- with a dog biscuit set on top. The princess was still in the truck, still in a snit. Ignoring food sets a new house record in canine obstinacy.
They do have good bargains. I’m snobby enough to notice the price-to-quality ratio is odd on this coffee, but not too stuck-up to drink it.
It makes me wonder . . . .
Small store. We have an old DG in one direction and a new DG in the other, but they’re not fancy. There’s one of the bigger DGs across the border in Alabama and it has a produce section. They built it directly across the highway from one of those Dollar Tree/Family Dollar combo stores and now everybody calls that the “Dollar Holler.”
My low-light vision is shot and I use a small rechargeable headlamp for handwork . . . and digging through the freezer, and doing crossword puzzles, and trimming the dog’s nails, etc. It’s nifty.
Y’know, that sleeping bag looks like a giant plush toy. I wonder what the princess dog would think of it?
I believe I’ve got Flickr working so folks in the Yewkay and Yerp can see pics. Following should be a picture of the dog biscuit delivery, and one of the princess dog communicating that she’s not leaving that truck until she gets a real ride.
ETA: Well, shit. The images show up in the typing pane, but not in the comment. I think the links work.
ETA: I see them now. So confusing.
The princess dog and Otis must be cousins - he gets in a major snit if FCD doesn’t take him along on errands. OK, he’s a little spoiled because he gets a McSausage Biscuit… It’s kinda hilarious - when FCD puts on his hat, Otis plasters himself to his leg.
I found a recipe for tarragon roasted spuds - actually using the little bite-size ones, but it’s work with any kind cut to bite size. Anyway, good recipe - it’s a keeper. We also had smoked turkey (Thanksgiving leftovers) and green beans, so a pretty healthy supper. Once I get the dishwasher loaded, I quit for the day. Laundry tomorrow, chillage tonight.
