Breaking news on my ABC (Australia) news tonight is that Margaret Thatcher has died.
I’ll save my grave-dancing for later.

And tramp the dirt down?
For good or ill, she leaves a legacy that can’t be easily dismissed.
Very nice.
It’s a funny thing really (funny weird, not funny ha-ha). How does one go about recognising the death of someone who was virulently hated by so many during their potent years, but who deteriorated into a comatosed shell wracked by dementia in their later times?
Who does one mourn (or vilify) as the case may be?
Maybe something for Great Debates?
Later…
Yeah, I know. I don’t like celebrating anyone’s death. But she is one of the people I despised most.
Berlusconi next, please?
State funeral I assume?
My feelings about her are best left out of this thread.
About 30 years too late.
Yeah, that’s the thing isn’t it? I became politically ‘aware’ during Thatcher’s reign, and hated her with a vengeance…but how can one ‘hate’ a feeble old woman who has no cognisance of the world around her?
Yeah, I can’t sustain white-hot hatred for an extended period of time even for her. So… she’s gone. I’m not sorry, I guess. She was an awful person who represents pretty much the opposite of everything I believe in. I think my country would have been better if she’d never been in power. I think her political actions caused untold and irreversible damage to some groups of people. But then she’s been part of history for so long now.
I wonder if there’ll be some measure of relief in the current Tory party - they can move on to the full hagiography, untroubled by the existence of the real person.
My response was, “wow she was still alive up until today?”
I really thought she was dead already.
Anyhow, I’m a fairly liberal guy so I figure I’d probably hate her but I don’t really know exactly what she did. I did see that Meryl Streep movie a year or two back but I didn’t glean enough from it to know exactly what she did that is so despised.
Hey Brits…how’d she get to be a Baroness? Isn’t that an inherited title?
Still though, pass the champagne.
RIP
Thank-you for saving Britain from economic collapse.
Nope, life peerage in her case (and lots of others - life peers are generally styled baron/ess). Reward for service etc etc
Thanks! Ignorance fought!
Ex politicians of note often get a seat in the House of Lords once they leave the House of Commons. ‘Baroness’ is just the title that happened to go with that gong.

Sell off the utility companies cheaply, destroy British industry, put millions out of work as a result, destroy community in favour of hardened capitalism. She was the true spirit of Gordon Gekko. She dismantled the bank-regulation which has ultimately led to our current woes. Oh, and introduced legislation that made it illegal to “promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship”.
However, I will not celebrate the death of an old lady.
