Former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has acknowledged that he fathered a child with a member of his household staff, a revelation that apparently prompted wife Maria Shriver to leave the couple’s home before they announced their separation last week.

From the one article I had read on it, she mentioned that she had only heard about him deciding to run for Governor when he announced it on TV, and wasn’t really happy with how that affected her career. Not a good thing for your marriage when you decide to go for such a high profile job which will also require your wife to quit her job - without ever discussing that with her first.

I remember thinking that the marriage was on shaky ground when (either during the campaign or just after he won the election) when she made it abundantly clear that she was not moving to Sacramento.
For those of you not familiar with CA, the idea of someone leading a Hollywood life in LA moving to Sacramento is sort of mind boggling. Sacramento is sees as a cultural wasteland, pretty much out in the desert-converted-to-farmland Central Valley whose only redeeming feature is its proximity to Tahoe. It’s just not done.
While I understand why she felt the need to leave Dateline (was it Dateline?), I really think that if she wanted to continue being a reporter, the public would have accepted it. It’s a TV newsmagazine, not the New York Times.
I did not follow the Schwarzenegger family’s personal lives closely while he was in office. Did Maria move to the capital or did she stay in LA during his term in office?
Probably has to do with NBC News’ ethics policy. As first lady she would have been way too involved in the political side of things to continue on as a reporter.
She made Arnold commute back and forth. The idea of Maria living in Sacto for 8 years is laughable.
