I’m trying to determine if Marie Antoinette was really, as a 2000 book title says, “the last queen of France”?
A colleague asserts that the actual last queen was Marie-Amelie, the
wife of Louis-Philippe (1830-1848), and besides, he says, Louis XVIII (1814-1824) had a wife named Louise of Savoie who was also queen after Marie Antoinette.
Damned if I know anything about this. Can anyone offer some insight?
No, she was not. Marie Amelie was, technically. However, if Empresses count, the last French queen would be Eugénie de Montijo, consort of Napoleon III.
I am no expert but:
“Empress of the French” Eugénie de Montijo was the last Queen or Empress. She reigned until September 4, 1870. She was the wife of Napoleon III.
Maria Amalia of the Two Sicilies was considered the “Queen of the French”. She could be considered the last Queen.
But** Maria Antonia Josepha Johanna von Habsburg-Lothringen** was the last person to hold the Title “Queen of France” so it could be considered a matter of semantics. She was also the last Queen in a basically unit erupted line of Queens.
