someone on another board gave me a link to an article about hydrocephalus and said that it said edical marijuana could be used to treat hydroephalus. problem is, i can’t open the file for some reason.
to me this idea sounds absolutely ridiculous. i myself have hydrocephalus (it hasn’t given me any trouble in about seven years tho.) there would be really no point in using it. i mean, yeah, it MIGHT ease the pain, but that’s not the whole problem. surgery is GOING to be needed sooner or later… the sooner the better… since the condition not only causes pain but can result in nerve damage (like when it screwed up my optic nerve), brain damage and even death. so really, the pain is just the tip of the iceberg. and really although i’d appreciate that treatment i don’t want the doctor just saying, “uh, smoke this… we’ll operate on you… sometime.”
if it’s not just for before surgery, could someone please explain the whole idea to me or even open the file and copy and paste if possible?
The link is a Microsoft Powerpoint presention, FYI, so if you can access a computer with a full version of Microsoft Office you should be able to view it that way.
(I read some of the file, but cutting and pasting the whole thing may or may not be a copyright violation, and I don’t know enough about the subject to provide strategic excerpts.)
As the mother of a son with non-communicating hydrocephalus I have researched this topic extensively over the past 11 years. I have never heard of using marijuana as a treatment for hydrocephalus.
According to the paper you linked to, medical marijuana can be used to decrease CSF which would only be beneficial in communicating hydrocephalus. Of the three drugs mentioned, the marijuana is the only one with out any reference to back up the claim.
The cite referenced in the OP does not really come off very professional nor does it provide any information beyond what one would find in a general intro to hydrocephalus pamphlet. IOW, it looks as if it was put together by a first-year med student.
If you are looking for resources, I’d be happy to help out.
Huh? Are you saying that docor that would recommend this treatment must smoke himself, and thus must be lazy? Well, I’m not going to go into the whole lazy pothead stereotype, but I will ask you if you’d suddenly think your doctor was a junkie because he offered you painkillers. If not, then don’t assume every doctor who thinks pot would be a good medicine is a stoner.
That said, I really don’t know about your specific condition and how marijuana relates to its treatment, but I can offer you some advice on opening the file. You don’t need the full version of Office to view a Powerpoint file. All you need is Microsoft’s free Powerpoint Viewer.
I haven’t read the site, but I will note that this is not unusual. To get a grant to study pot, a researcher must be trying to prove harmful effects. Someone trying to prove pot helps with disease x is SOL when it comes to getting grants, except in rare cases (like the IOM study a couple years back that proved pot had medical uses, and, of course, was completely ignored). Corporations won’t put up their money to test it because marijuana is a plant and you can’t patent it. No profit == no interest.
Good point neutron star. I hadn’t thought about that. Personally, I think the stuff should be legal but as they say that’s a whole 'nother kettle of fish. I sincerely hope that the OP has access to quality neurological care as this is a serious issue.
all i meant was i don’t want just a “band-aid” to stop the pain temporarily. of course, now that i think of it, my doctor would probably be eager to operate since it costs my mom a good couple grand.
Ah, I misunderstood you, gypsymoth3. Your clarification makes perfect sense. Good luck with your treatment.
i have hydrocephalus and im only 16 ive had it my hole life and smoking marijuana makes the pain go away. When I was in the hospital they were always giving me pain killers and every thing but it didnt work all i wanted to do was smoke to get the pain to go away.in the state i live in i think medical marijuana should be legalized for the poeple who really need it.
