Marijuana Possession and College Loans, Scholarships and Other College Assistance

my dumbass cousin just bought 4 ounces (for $250) and decided to start dealing some and ended up getting caught. what are the laws concerning possession and college loans etc. (in south carolina)? can he never get any government money for college or is it just for a couple years that he can’t? please include a link if possible.

oops!
mods, you can delete the other two if you want…
it’s AOL fault, i swear!

Have your dumbass cousin read and remember (assuming he’s not drug-addled at the time):

I fetched that from http://www.eckerd.edu/financialaid/geninfo.php

4 ounces for $250? Are you sure that’s right?

No kidding!! Methinks a decimal got misplaced…

Off-Topic-But-Sort-Of-Related-And-Interesting-Anecdote: A friend of a friend of mine had a full baseball scholarship to a prestigious college, he was a pitcher and damn good at it, might have had a shot at the majors. Except he had a moderately serious cocaine problem. Apparently the people giving him the scholarship found out, and with the police set up a sting operation that got him busted. Total entrapment (at least, that’s his take on it…he was arrested but never charged), but it was enough to lose him the scholarship. Moral is: if you plan on having a future, don’t even THINK of getting involved with drugs!!

that’s what my mom said, but she might’ve been wrong.

that wouldn’t be right either… 4 ounces for $2,500? that’s like $600-something an ounce. he’s not THAT stupid. maybe 4 oz. for $350.

No, if it’s schwag then $250 is actually $50 higher than average, at least around here. Not only did he get busted, he got ripped off. He’s really isn’t very smart, is he? You gotta TRY to get caught if you’re only moving a QP.

The prices you guys are quoting are more for kind bud.

Tim

I am shocked and saddened that one of the main reasons drugs prevent people from having a future is due purely to man made punitive measures.

We have to PUNISH people for ruining their lives by… umm… ruining their lives!

Isn’t there something in Michael Moore’s Stupid White Men about this? I’ll see if I have the book around, but I think he says that while the above is true, those with non-drug related criminal records are still eligible for assistance.

oops… I just realized this is GQ, not Great Debates. :o

no, it’s normally $10/3g or $80-100/oz. here.

i guess i’m moving to kansas city once i finish college.

As someone who just recently filled out his renewal financial aid application, I can tell that a drug conviction pretty much knocks you out of eligiblity for federal aid. Here’s this page at the FAFSA website to confirm this.

Note that this only pertains to the federal aid. State rules on financial aid vary, so it’d probably be best to check with the school’s financial aid office. That’s also the best place to find out the school’s rules on giving scholarships to people with drug convictions.

i thought only certain idiots in my class used the verb-age words.
