I read an article (news of the weird) about a burglar who after after gathering up all the stuff he wanted to steal from a house would take a dump in the middle of the living room.
When I read about this I thought, sounds like something a dog would do – peeing on a fence post to mark his territory.
I guess what I’m asking is that what this is? Was this guy following some primal urge to mark his territory?

I Don’t know why you think that, when it’s clearly the case (and indeed cause) that defecating burglars are actually uncircumcised, gun-owning homosexual communists. 
I don’t have an answer for you, but as I understand it, the behaviour you’re describing is not at all uncommon; I think it could probably be better compared to the poo-flinging chimps at the zoo - i.e. an expression of aggression, than a territory-marking thing, because I don’t think territory-marking is all that common in primates - or at least you don’t hear much about it if it is.
When I bought my new house, after the foundation was poured but before the framing had begun, I pissed on the foundation to mark my territory. I would have used the bathroom had there been one, and there wasn’t a Spot-a-Pot nearby either.
Dogs mark their territory with a particular scent. Presumably, regardless of the reason he (she?) did this, the burglar would leave a particular scent.
Can you get some sort of DNA evidence from stool samples? Considering what’s been said in the SD books and and this Board, I’d think so. If the guy ever gets caught, he ought to be easy to link to other such crimes, even if he isn’t caught “in the act”.
