Could anyone point me to a reference or web site which has figures for the software industry subdivided into categories such as games, business software, etc ?
I’m having a hard time constructing a suitable query. What I’m looking for is something which will support (or not) my impression that academic research on software issues (software engineering or computer science to use the broadest categories) doesn’t match industry trends (for example I’ve found reletively little academic research on games development issues (except at the very technical level) whereas I believe it has a respectable share of the software market.
Sorry this isn’t phrased terribly well, but econometrics ain’t my area.
I don’t really mind if the figures are global or just US or Europe …
I don’t know if such a site really exists, Sir Doris. As a software engineer who aspires to get into the games side of things, I haven’t seen one, and it’s not for want of trying!
You’re right about the games industry’s share of the market (e.g. Grand Theft Auto bringing in revenue comparable to a major Hollywood film) but how you get figures to say exactly how much it’s worth is tricky.
At any rate, GamesInvestor might help you somewhat, as economics is its primary focus.
You might also want to try general investments data sites, to get info for the appropriate market sectors.
