I know some people who have married foreigners to help them get residency in the USA, and have been paid to do this. I’ve been told that, once I get my divorce finalized, I could make a few thousand dollars this way myself.
I’m considering it, but I also realize I’m something of a sociopath. This sounds like something that many people would consider wrong for various reasons, but I’m not sure how big a deal it is, as the people I know who are doing it seem like relatively decent people. What’s the board opinion?
Well it takes a few years to get a green card even after you get married. I was married to a Russian woman and it took her 5 years to get through her citizenship, had she not had her green card before we got married it would have taken longer.
I find you disgusting for even considering it. And you know it’s wrong or you wouldn’t be here asking what we thought about it.
When I worked construction I knew a few men who would go to the Philippines and pick up a young, attractive wife, cheap. These men were scumbags; foul, abusive, constantly drunk, in and out of jail, etc. The women would hang around long enough to get citizenship then dump them. This was no problem for them as the women were nothing but something to hump. In a couple of months they’d have new ones.
I’d rate your actions as marginally above theirs as you probably won’t be beating them up.
Quite beyond the moral aspects, this is illegal. The SDMB doesn’t exist to help people figure out whether or not to break the law.
