Has anyone else seen this film?? I’d love to discuss if so.
I’ll just say for now that it was quite well acted and well directed.
Oh, and completely fucking creepy.

I think I’m supposed to keep my mouth shut about films I like but I couldn’t stand to see this thread die without any responses. It is a really good film, dark, quiet, paranoid, stumbling in and out of Martha’s reality, past and present. I’ve never been in a cult but I’ve done quite a bit of reading and research over the years and to me it’s a very good depiction of how a lot of people who leave cults feel after escaping. Martha has an extra thick layer of paranoia because it really was a dangerous cult.
I hated and kept forgetting the title until I saw the movie, but now I’ll never forget it. Each name is very meaningful within the context of the film.
Martha - her real name
Marcy May - the name the cult leader (a chilling John Hawkes) gives her as part of cutting her off from her old life.
Marlene - It’s the name all the cult women used when answering the phone.
Her identity is completely stolen as she’s indoctrinated into the cult, but she manages to retain enough of the old Martha to have the courage to flee the cult when it finally becomes too overwhelming. Things seem fine as she settles into her new (old) life but then the paranoia starts. And we find out why in flashbacks throughout the movie.
It’s a very good piece of work from first-time director Sean Durkin, and Elizabeth Olsen is fantastic. Both should have great careers ahead of them. It’s a possibility that Olsen might get an Oscar nomination as Best Actress but that could just be too optimistic. I’m glad the movie is getting the attention it is. I was lucky enough to meet Durkin and Olsen at an advance screening and they’re both very nice.
I saw the film this weekend and haven’t yet made up my mind about it.
The acting was all fantastic, especially the woman playing Martha/Marcie May. Nothing really surprised me about the movie’s plot, including the stabbing and I haven’t decided if that’s because of good foreshadowing or me being all sorts of movie-savvy.
Plenty of people in the audience actually booed the ending. Anyone else experience that?
That’s all I needed to hear, I’m in.
Most of the audience laughed or went, “Shit!” when the credits rolled. What I loved so much was the impending question of whether Martha will go back to the cult or the cult come back to her.
Was it clear that:
The cult was coming after she called and hung up? They rang back instantly. Plus, it didn’t seem like they were looking for her before she called. It seemed like Patrick and the rest had faith in her return and that’s why Blonde Boy was so easy on her in the diner.
Also, I thought the creepiest was:
Once the rocks and pebbles were hitting the rented house’s roof, it was like hearing, “We’re heee-eeere!” (shudders)
Either way, I loved it. Was creeped out for days over that. Even if a cutie told me, “you’re hot, wanna have sex?” I’d yell, “NOOOO!” and run away.
