Martin Gardner's Religion?

A bunch of obits for Martin Gardner in the Skeptical Inquirer called him a deist. Wikipedia says he was a theist. I’ve googled around a bit and found a site which said he considered himself a fideist (which is odd since, like, nobody considers themself a fideist). What were Garder’s beliefs and how do I find out more about them?

In this book he explains his beliefs in detail:

You want to read his book The Whys of a Philosophical Scrivener, in which he describes in detail his philosophical and religious beliefs. It’s a wonderful, fascinating read, especially the chapters on religious issues.

Definitely Jewish. Eh. . . oh, that’s Gardner.

I’m not sure what you mean by saying that no one considers themself a fideist. First, here’s the Wikipedia entry about it:

It appears that the terms “fideism” and “fideist” are relatively recent ways of classifying together philosophies and people who weren’t often lumped together before. That doesn’t mean that the ideas of fideism didn’t exist before. It just means that it’s only recently that people thought of it as a single idea.
