Haven’t seen Hulk, so I can’t rate it.
I think I’ve got to do tiers:
Really Amazing:
Iron Man
Avengers
Pretty Good:
Captain America
Thor Dark World
Iron Man 3
Somewhat Shaky
Thor
Iron Man 2
Pretty much what Lasciel said. The first Iron Man and The Avengers were just amazing. As usual, Iron Man 3 beats 2 by a wide margin. And after Ang Lee’s version, I stopped bothering with Hulk until The Avengers made him great again.
I’m really looking forward to CA: The Winter Soldier.
Haven’t seen Amazing Spider-man, or the new Thor yet.
This topic needs a poll. Didn’t realize the Marvel Cinematic Universe was a real thing. After checking the OP link I pared it down to.
I didn’t see Lee’s Hulk based on lackluster reviews. Here’s my list top to bottom:
[ol]
[li]The Avengers[/li][li]Iron Man 3[/li][li]Captain America[/li][li]Iron Man[/li][li]Thor: The Dark World[/li][li]Thor[/li][li]The Incredible Hulk[/li][li]Iron Man 2[/li][/ol]
2 - 5 will shift depending on my mood or the time of day. Avengers is up there as one of the best comic book movies, regardless of the universe. Thor was good, maybe it would go up with the other guys if I watched it again, but, for now I keep it a tiny step below. The Incredible Hulk is mediocre. I didn’t hate it, but I wouldn’t rush out to see it again, either. And, they would have to put terrible things on screen to match how bad Iron Man 2 was. That was a waste of everyone’s time. I’m glad they were able to come back and fix things with the excellent Iron Man 3.
Iron Man, Thor: TDW, Iron Man 3, and Thor are all very, very close to each other. Iron Man 2 isn’t completely worthless as it gives us Black Widow fighting all those security guards and the scene where Iron Man and the robots chasing each other sets off the car alarms, but it’s a bit of a mishmash and Whiplash is a poor fusion of two Iron Man villains. Incredible Hulk isn’t bad bad, but it’s a misfire.
Avengers and Captain America are really close as well. I love the earnestness in Captain America and I believe in it during the movie. There’s a little too much CGI slugfest at the end and ultimately the Avengers get the top slot because it’s everyone together and it’s handled deftly by Whedon.
I am anxiously awaiting Winter Soldier.
The Avengers I placed #1 for 2 reasons: it was the best all-around film, in every conceivable way, and THANOS!!!
The Dark World I only place #2 because THE COLLECTOR!!! Which simply points to THANOS QUEST!!!
Otherwise, I’d likely have The Dark World at #6 and move 3-6 all up one spot. When I was a kid collecting comics, The Invincible Iron Man was my title. When I collected briefly in the early '90s, I was all about Thanos and Silver Surfer.
I liked all these MCU movies, but the only one I had no interest seeing in-theater (and didn’t) was Captain America. I bought the Blu-Ray, however, and really liked it. The theatrical trailer for The Winter Soldier was awesome, so I am excited to see it, now.
1. Marvel’s The Avengers - Absolutely no discussion on this one. If anyone’s list doesn’t have this one first, the rest of their list is invalidated. It’s not a perfect film, of course, and it may or may not be the best comic film of all time (I think I’m still partial to Dark Knight), it has the total package.
2. Thor: The Dark World - This one still needs some baking time and may well drop (definitely better than the first one, though), but I really enjoyed it. It has a really good balance of character, action, and humor. As much as I love Natalie Portman, her character Jane Foster is superfluous and annoying. Tom Hiddelston’s Loki is easily the best character in the enter MCU, and he shines more here than Avengers or Thor.
3. Iron Man - An all around fun film. I almost put this at 2, and it may well end up there in the long run. I wish it had a bit more action in general, and it has a few minor plot problems, but probably their most consistent effort.
4. Captain America - Surprisingly good, as I went in expecting it to be awful and thinking Captain America was lame. It gets a little slow at times though. I really liked Chris Evans as Cap, it’s hard to believe it’s the same guy that played Johnny Storm in FF; ditto for Hugo Weaving as Red Skull. The rest of the characters are uninteresting and forgettable.
5. Thor - Enjoyable, but uneven pacing. I’m not sure how they could have fixed that given the story they were telling, but it hurts the overall flow of the film. Like the sequel, the worst part is Jane Foster, and she’s even more worthless in this film, and the best part is Loki.
6. The Incredible Hulk - It’s okay at best. Bruce Banner/Hulk is a fascinating character, he’s one of the best parts of Avengers, but he just can’t be the main protaganist. The problem is, we have to have a connection with the hero’s alter-ego, but with Bruce Banner, if we connect with him and want him to succeed, then that means not seeing the Hulk, which is the whole reason we’re there. As the Joke goes, What’s the one thing in the world the Hulk cannot carry? His own movie.
7. Iron Man 3 - It was fun, but it had some major plot issues, particularly the bait and switch on the Mandarin and the whole action sequence at the end had no investment. Also, not enough Iron Man. It has so many of the same flaws that a lot of third Super Hero movies, Dark Knight Rises, X-Men 3, Spider-Man 3, also have, of trying to cram too much into one film. So while I generally enjoyed it in the theater, I was left disappointed afterward when I thought about it.
8. Iron Man 2 - Just a bad film. It has as many plot issues as IM3, but it’s lacking in the fun department too. I was just all around disappointed with this film, even as I was watching it. The only redeeming quality is Scarlett Johanson.
Tommy Lee Jones? Stanley Tucci? Jones was very entertaining, and Tucci’s scenes with Evans had great by-play between the two, and you got the idea their characters were instant friends despite very different lives/backgrounds.
Still, the TV series was fun. “I sure do sympathize with Bill Bixby trying to solve this calmly and reasonably – but goddamn, those guys need a beating.”
Now that I’ve had a chance to think about it:
1: The Avengers. The fact that they were able to make a movie with so many stars, and give all of them (well, except Hawkeye) their due, is nothing short of amazing. All the pieces fit together for a whole that was greater than the sum of the parts.
2: Captain America. I’ve always been fond of the trope of the hero who is already worthy, and who is given power because of his worthiness, and the movie did an excellent job with that.
3: Iron Man 3. Better than the first two mostly because the villain wasn’t just another guy in a powered suit. Downey also did a good job with the PTSD characterization.
4: Iron Man 2. Better villain characterization than the first one, even though he is still yet another mirror of Stark.
5: Thor. Would probably be higher, but I really wanted to be able to relate to Natalie Portman’s character, but I just couldn’t.
6: Iron Man. An origin story was necessary, and given that it was an origin story they did about as good a job as they could with it, but origin stories always tend to be a bit dry.
7: Thor: The Dark World. I think the biggest flaw was that a purely nihilistic villain is boring. Portman’s character was even harder to relate to, since they didn’t even attempt to pay lip service to the science. Still not what I’d call a bad movie, though.
Numbers 3-6 on the list are a bit fluid. If Ang Lee’s Hulk counts, it’s well below The Dark World-- It seemed vague and unfocused. And because I was so disappointed with it, I never saw The Incredible Hulk.
