I’ll give it a couple more episodes - but initial impression is kind of blah.
Not really caring about anyone right now, but Karnak appears to be the most interesting. Gorgon and the surfer dudes together in a fight could be fun if the bad guys show up there (which they kind of have to).
Black Bolt’s inability to speak is going to be very limiting to his character I think - imperious hand waving is only going to get him so far.
I watched the premiere; it didn’t help that the actor seemed to be limited to two facial expressions, both of which suggested constipation.
A friend of mine, who’s a Hollywood screenwriter (as well as a huge superhero fan) absolutely hated the premiere episode. I’m not sure if this is true or not, but he indicated that:
If so, they saved about $2. And probably overpaid, at that.
This was absolutely awful: bad writing, bad acting, bad costumes + scenery, bad CGI. They gave no setup, so there’s no reason to like any of these “characters” – and we didn’t really get a feel for any of the characters… character, anyway. And they’re set up as all-the-superpowerz… which they eliminated or didn’t use. Karnak’s visualization thing was the least uninteresting, but it’ll get old soon replaying scenes. Gorgon’s stomp was ‘seen-that’ stuff. Black Bolt’s power uses just made me laugh.
Even worse, since Iwan Rheon actually seemed to put some effort into acting (instead of just scowling, like Black Bolt), and since he was actually arguing for the overthrow of the people ruling things because of eugenics… he ended up way more sympathetic than the scowly entitled nitwits who can’t figure out cars or cellphones.
… oddly, this is pretty much my reaction to most Inhumans comics series, so at least they’re matching the source material well.
 That is so WTF as to be unbelievable! What purpose does “Medusa” serve now? She’s basically Gwen DeMarco. I watched until the first commercial and didn’t finish, I won’t be now. Truthfully, I wasn’t going back anyway.
I didn’t mind it, but it would need to get somewhere interesting quickly. The Gifted premieres tonight and if it knocks it out of the park this show is likely doomed.
I wasn’t connecting with anyone in this story about political intrigue in a kingdom of mutants on the Moon. There have been stories taking place in equally outlandish locations that have instantly drawn me in. After two hours about the only one on the show I like is the dog.
The lunar rover woman might have provided a good in for the audience but she was barely in the episode.
It would have been funny if they kept everyone being tough and bad-assed at the beginning but when they get to Earth they struggle to roll around or crawl. Medusa and that other woman would have their big fight in wheel chairs, doing their best to raise a hand to slap each other before a nurse comes over to separate them for being too feisty.
Not that you’d know it from this show, but Attilan was in the “Blue Area” of the moon – a zone created by the Kree with Earthlike atmosphere and gravity for no discernible reason.
Of course, Attilan is also supposed to be a spaceship, essentially, which makes its concrete + brutal aesthetic architecture here somewhat goofy.
I wasn’t that impressed, but I’ll likely keep watching. It’s not as if Fridays are replete with shows that draw my interest, anyway: Killjoys and Wynonna Earp are off until next summer, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. doesn’t come back until… January?
I liked the Inhumans in the Fantastic Four comic books a hundred years ago. Like the FF themselves, I don’t think they translate well to film, or tv. I watched out of curiosity and found it silly. Ken Leung clambering around in Hawaii: god, he looked repulsive with that bleeding tattooed head! I couldn’t look at him…Cut off Medusa’s hair, her only reason to be in it? I’m outta here. The Inhuman city on the moon, all concrete walls and walkways, like a 70’s government building we have here downtown! Half expected to see a panhandler or two bumming a smoke off of someone. And that so-serious tone, and swelling serious music, as if this was Something Important and Dramatic…newp.
3 hours of Ramsey torture porn would have been better than this. As it is I felt like Theon on the rack watching this.
A friend was watching with me and he pointed out that Medusa’s hair gave a new type of tentacle porn. Most interesting thing about the show.
Not only was the bad buzz a decent warning sign, I’m kind of over a lot of the other superhero shows that I used to enjoy. They’ve fallen back into the Lois and Clark cheesiness that they had at first managed to avoid. So it’s no big deal to me to not watch what is, from all accounts, quite disappointing.
I still like Agents Of SHIELD, but that’s probably now on its final season, and I’m okay with that too.
