Mary Chapin Carpenter is one of my Top 5 Alltime Concerts I’ve Ever Been To, and I didn’t even like country music at the time.

My dad had gotten tickets to see her out at Wolftrap in Virginia. this was back in 1992-93-94, somewhere in there. It was in the summer.

Anyway, turned out that he couldn’t go, so he asked if I wanted the tickets. My best friend was over at the time and we both said, “Sure,” at the same time, my friend with a bit more enthusiasm then me.

So we drive out there, and the seats turned out to be fabulous.

FABULOUS.

2nd row, just ever so slightly stage right.

The opening act was BeauSoleil.

My friend and I spent the entire 2 1/2 hour concert on our feet .

It was astonishingly good.

Welcome to the SDMB Saracen Pig! Spartan Dog!

I neglected to explain my OP, but what I’m fishing for are the selections that other dopers would make for the categories that I listed. So since you’ve been converted to the other Church of Mary, share your opinion about her best work.

She is one of my all time favorites, and yet I cannot seem to bring myself to see her in concert. I fear The Rapture.

My favourite cover is “Grow Old With Me” which I first heard on Working Class Hero a tribute album to John Lennon but is now on Party Doll…

She really has a song for every mood, and that’s the one for sobbing at weddings.

Growing up in the early nineties to parents that listened to country, I was forced to listen to it (and liked it at the time) but the only two songs of hers I’m familiar with are “She Thinks He’ll Keep Her” and “Down at the Twist and Shout”, both of which I remember liking well enough.

I had no idea she was anything more than one (or two?) hit wonder.

steps to the side to avoid the lightening strikes, while thinking “Og, am I that old already at 29??.”

Mary is truly a genre-transcending talent. You don’t have to like country music to like her. Give her a listen, now that you’re not being forced to.

MCC’s official bio
and

infoplease.com says:

The albums missing from that are:

[ul]
[li]Party Doll and other favorites 1999[/li][li]timesexlove 2001[/li][/ul]

I personally didn’t fall in love with timesexlove, but I try not to think about that too much. :frowning:

Of course I just saw on her tour page that she’s coming to Atlanta’s Chastain (my favorite larger venue…outdoor…you can bring your own little table wine/cheese/candles) so now of course I simply must go.

She’s a country artist?

Seriously, she’s one of our favourites. Certainly, some of her songs don’t seem to be country, but I’ve never turned her off the radio because she’s “country.” She has a lot to say in her music, and I like to hear it. When my wife finally heard “Grow Old Along With Me,” she asked why we didn’t have it at our wedding.

Just wish my wife would stop going down to the corner for a Quick Pick, a pack of Camels, a burrito, and a Barq’s. She always walks, and as MCC says, why walk when you can fly?

honeydewgrrl,

Sorry about that.

You do know that she has a new album that is being released on April 27, 2004. It’s called Between Here And Gone.

I love “I Am a Town” and “Come On, Come On”.

Aww, TimeSexLove* has one of my favorite MCC songs, The Dreaming Road :

I just saw MCC in a guitar pull with Shawn Colvin, Patty Griffin, and Dar Williams. It was wonderful. The first I heard of her was from Come On, Come On and I listened to that CD over and over and over.

I like her uptempo stuff but the slower stuff seems to resound with me better.

About 5 years ago I found Adam Schneider’s website of guitar music for MCC (and some others) and he even figured out the tuning for a lot of the songs (a much more patient transcriber that I’d ever be).

I hate you. :stuck_out_tongue:
