Yes, Trump ordered more drone strikes in his first 2 years than Obama did in his entire 8 years of office. And we only know how many drone strikes he did those two years, because he stopped reporting them afterward. Obama created the policy of transparency to make those numbers public during his administration, and Trump ended that policy, probably because it was making him look terrible. (It’s kind of funny that he cared back then, now I don’t think he’d give a shit.)

What makes the drone strikes (which are also problematic for a number of reasons, not least of which because of civilian deaths) different from these boat attacks, is that presumably the drones were used on military targets. These aren’t military targets. These are fishing boats accused of having drugs in them.
Yeah, the US military does, from time to time, kill people. That’s rather part of the job description of a military, and nobody but hardcore pacifists objects to that fact in itself. What’s relevant is whom they’re killing. Were there any particular Obama drone strikes that you considered especially objectionable?

Seriously though you can tell this isn’t really about stopping drugs. If it was they would want to take them prisoner so you can get information about the drug cartel’s operation. But actual effective law enforcement is contrary to the goal of keeping the drug war going so that you can carry on painting South American immigrants as violetn criminals.
Or, it could be indeed about stopping drugs, but just by intimidation with some murder of innocents. For sure some cartel smugglers are going to be afraid to ship narcotics into America, and in the eyes of the Trump administration, the death of a few dozen or hundred innocent people is just welp, too bad, the price to be paid.

I am just trying to wrap my head around this. Let’s give the Administration all the benefit of the doubt. Let’s say they had proof that these were drug boats and everyone on board was a criminal. Let’s say we are at war with the drug dealers. Let’s even say they had a valid reason for targeting the boats. How can you justify a second strike on survivors clinging to the wreckage? There is no “fog of war” here. There is no justification for summarily executing criminals without due process. There is no justification for executing people whose crimes do not merit the death penalty. It’s like Hegsdeth is playing a game where the goal is to completely destroy the enemy. But this is not a game. These are real people who have not committed capital crimes according to the Administration. This is straight up murder. Why are the generals not refusing? Are their cushy jobs worth more than any integrity or common decency? They are being thrown under the bus regardless but what kind of country allows this?
Easily enough, from a right wing viewpoint. They are criminals, which means they “deserve” death. They are brown, which means they “deserve” death. And they aren’t rich and American, which means their lives are worth nothing to begin with.
